Hi smile

Generally for my personal data I would be more concerned about the American tech giants that steal my data and store it for commercial gain. I do not readily give it away by playing on social media but that does not stop them collecting stuff to use against me if they see an opportunity.cry

Possibly the Chinese may be more of a worry for security but who knows. We have agreements with our allies so we just give the data to them if they ask. Do they give theirs to us if it was in our interest, what do you think ?? disbelief

Probably on a side note but I listened to a Podcast the other day on the young man from Sweden (I think) who recently went missing from a northern NSW seaside town.

After they lost sight of him on the local CC cameras they were able to trace him through google. Well everyone knows that they can do that but in this case his phone was switched off.
What his parents did when they got to Aus to look for him was to get the hack on his phone and his online accounts by a private person so that his entire movements were traced.
Unfortunately it did not result in him being found but the information from the hack was amazing. Apparently they could even tell when he was running as opposed to walking.
The activity of the phone was not proof that the missing boy still had the phone on his person.
Apparently the Australian authorities have difficulty in accessing this hack in a short time frame.

Anyone interested in the story should search.

The Lighthouse.
Searching for Theo Hayez.

Back on topic....China is a very dangerous country which have been given too much leeway in our modern society.

Angie

honestly you have to be crazy if you dont think almost everthing you do in your daily activities leaves crumbs of data that is being compiled everywhere.

everytime you go shopping use your plastic card to pay for it, use a rewards card, give your post code when asked by a sales assistant, every warrenty card you fill in and send away, every application for credit and so on..........its endless.

Add to that all the various government and non government forms you fill out with your details, doctors visits, chemist and all other allied businesses.

You can offset these crumbs of data if you decide to deal in cash only, but that only works so far, because every now and again you need to replenish your stash of cash, unless you have it all stored under the mattress you will have to visit a bank, ATM or whatever, but then you leave a few crumbs then.

Oh crap we have a mobile phone, the internet, a smart tv. They know where you are!

So in the words form a famous song "Dont worry, Be Happy" give the world the bird and say F U I dont give a rats ar$e what you know about me.

I pay cash for most things but a shop could easily match up sales with video surveillance. Some places now do not accept cash.

Council rates & parking permits, I send council photographs of trip hazards etc.

Stata levy & I am on our block of units committee.

Investment property, managing agent knows a lot about me & I know a lot about my tenants.

National Park passes, stayed in a hotel or caravan park.

If you have shares you are on company data bases & also with the government.

I had my tax done last week so I asked the accountant what should I bring with me - nothing she said I've got access to it all, what you earnt, the tax you paid, your private medical data, the bank interest that you received, your wife's income it's all available on line. You just need to let me know if you had any work related expenses  - no problem I used my credit card so those records are also available via my online banking. What worries me is that if all that sort of personal data is accessible just by entering a tax file number (other than my internet banking) then eventually a serious hacker could possibly work out how to get to it.

No doubt there are plenty of people in this world who would like nothing better than to get hold of personal data in order to rip people off but I'm not sure that intenational governments would waste their time targeting individuals like me...When I work overseas I remove the sim card from my phone and replace it with a local one - to get that sim I have to give them my passport, same if I exchange money, seek medical treament, open a bank account, check into a hotel or even enter a game park. Whenever I log on to the internet and use either a search engine or social media, make credit card transactions, pass through an airport they know exactly where I am so my movements could be tracked by lots of people without too much difficulty.

I know that the government at least, knows more about me than I do and that is just how it is these days. I just don't let it worry me. If someone wants to take an interest in this old fart, they will get pretty bored in a hell of a hurry.
