You will need almost 10 liters for an oil change in a BT50. I have been told not to mix different brands of oils.
My old trade the oil manufacturer didn't matter, all oil was made to a set specification. But I am just trying to use up the oil I have, seems a waste just to throw it out.
Both 5W30, both full synthetic. No problems. Probably from the same place anyway.
Hi Iana
Yea just do it. I would. The big oil suppliers do test to make sure there is no incompatibility between their oil and other major brands, obviously the additives really. They are not going to say that out too loudly are they Jaahn

Is the oil Magnatec or Magnatec diesel? If it is not for the diesel, it probably doesn't as high a detergent concentration and may not be suited for the engine.
I am led to believe that A5 is for petrol engine, and that B5 is for diesel engine
I use (at the present time), Nulon full synthetic A5/B5, this oil is suitable for both petrol, and light diesel engines
I don't know about Castrol or Valvoline oils, but Nulon do sell 3 types of oil, (same grade 5W-30) one is for petrol, one is for diesel, and one covers both engines
Not sure what would happen, if you put petrol oil in a diesel engine, as I think diesel engines may need detergent in their oil
My engine oil capacity is 5.7 litres, so I will either buy 5 or 6 litre containers of oil, plus 300 ml of Nulon engine oil additive, this means that I will always have some oil left over
The only two brands I have used so far are Penrite and Nulon, and have put a litre or so, of one to the other, instead of throwing it away
Hi Ian,
I'd check the specs out on the net for the two oils - especially the temperature operating ranges.
And if you mix them, I'd suggest no heavy work until the next change. I recall in my trainee-technician days of mixing two brands in a glass bottle - they didn't mix, there was a divide between them - what the overall affect was, I don't know.
If your car has a DPF, it may have some bearing on the suitable oil.
Hi Tony,
My last two Patrols held 10L in the sump/filter. And I was in Belconnen, Canberra for a service, got my regular 15/40 mineral oil on "special" (6L containers) & asked a company I'd used before to do the service using the supplied oil - mentioning the sump held 10L.
Imagine my surprise when I went to pay the bill - there were two empty containers in the car! Yes, there was 12L of oil in the engine & it was a nice messy job to drain those extra 2L out!!
I don't know that Nylon oil additive is required in engines, these days. Gearboxes, yes.

If you don't get it done today, there's always tomorrow!
Back in a previous life when I was working as a diesel mechanic on some small fleets of mixed equipment we converted to using tractor oil universal. We bought by the "44" drum and used it in everything, cars, tractors, machinery, petrol large and small, diesels large and small, gearboxes, hydraulics and assorted uses. The price was good, the operators could not make a mistake what to use and it was easy !!!
Never had any problems and was very good. Indeed I would not be surprised if some of that equipment was still going strong. When one organisation were convinced to buy a lot of well known 'green' coloured equipment they tried to get them to buy specific oils as per their book recommendations for each individual use for 'warranty purposes'. However we resisted and HEY what a surprise they produced a "44" of their own branded tractor oil universal to sell us. And well priced like the previous brand. And hey no problem with the warranties either !
So I do believe that oil is a marketing opportunity and these days is being milked for all they can get. Now I do not suggest you convert to that type of oil but my mate on the farm has now. Possibly newer diesel engines do need better oil and DPF does have some specific needs. But use common sense in looking at the topic. IMHO I have quickly googled two common brands of TOU oil. Every brand sells it. Note there are exclusions for some uses, eg hypoid diffs.

PS There were NO diesel engines then that did not have a prefilter/water seperator before the main filter. Even the small ones had a glass bowl with strainer. Where is the progress there ??

Hi, We have a BT50 (2014) 5 cyl diesel. We were made aware that after draining the oil, it must be refilled very soon after, as if it is allowed to drain for a long time the pump will not pick up again and damage will be done. I believe it is correct, so keep that in mind.
Cheers, Bob
Your quite correct when changing oil in a BT50 or Ford Ranger fitted with the 3.2 Litre Diesel, you MUST complete the change in under 10 minutes.
You're best the change the Oil Filter first, replacing it prior to draining the engine oil, remove the sump pump and drain the oil until you have it dripping out.
This should be no longer than 4 minutes maximum, replace the sump plug and fill the engine with oil immediately and start the engine, allowing it to idle.
The engine features a vain oil pump and is unable to prime itself with oil, failure will mean that the engine will seize if started.
Now the good news if you over drain the engine due to a cup of tea no need to worry you only have to remove the engine and have the oil pump primed by a mechanic.
