Isuzu new my21 D MAX lsm dual cab ute

Hi, I have just taken possession of the currant new d max my 21 ute {LSM}. My enquiry relates to whether to fit any, some or none of the following. No.1 is a Catch Can, No.2 is fit a Primary Filter. and No.3 is fit an extra Oil transmission cooler. I have fitted a Primary Filter & extra Oil transmission coolers to some of my past tow vehicles. I am seeking responces from all the knowledgeable mechanical minded persons out there. I am interested to hear whether it is considered a need or not to fit one, some or none. Not having had a D Max before I am wondering if the new model is similar to the later models. I am quite prepared to accept both positive or negative replies. I mainly travel inland in most instances so can be a long distance on occasions from a major town should any situation arise from faulty fuel or overheating etc. Hence the discussion relevant to a Primary Fuel Filter and the Oil Cooler. There may not be too many vanners with the new Isuzu d Max but lots with the latter models. So am not sure if there is a lot of difference between the new one and the previous models. I take this opportunity to say thanks for any replies as all will be most welcome. In many instances the best advice comes from persons with mechanical skills and knowledge. Needless to say I am not one of those. Travel safe if lucky enough to be on the road at present. Cheers, RAINBIRD ROVERS

Hi RR

All the extras that you mentioned are a must if intend to travel inland for long lasting engine and transmission life .I would also suggest to do oil change every 7500 km not every 15000 km like Isuzu suggest. I have a 2017 dmax with the dpf filter and just on 110 000km . I put a secondary filter on but no catch can and have had a software update in transmission to reduce overheating of auto trans when towing my van which is 3500 ton but if I bought new again those 3 things would be the first on the list

cheers

Hi RAINBIRD ROVERS,
I have a 2019 D-max & have so far fitted a catch can (& have been amazed at how much oil it has caught). I deliberated over two brands before making my decision.

Also fitted an auxiliary battery & put it in the tub (cooked enough batteries in my Patrols in the past.
Regarding the fuel filter, in the past with lower pressure pumps, I added/replaced the filter with one that had a clear bowl so you could see if the was any water, gunk present. A friend with a Landcruiser ute (& does extensive out back travel) has a WaterWatch fitted. He said it give warning of any water in the fuel & can be drained off - without restricting the fuel pressure. I'm yet to decide (there's not much room available).

I've added a conventional AM/FM radio aerial to the bull bar as the silly shark fin on top is designed for FM & higher frequencies. There are two aerials in it - one for the GPS, one for the radio. If you want to listen to the ABC out in the sticks for emergency information, you have to be able to tune into the AM band.

I've tossed the idea of a transmission cooler out for the time being. My van weighs a maximum of two tonnes, aren't towing full time & I'm led to believe the existing cooler (via the coolant) is sufficient. One issue with an extra cooler is that you may have to cover it in colder climates. I have bought a Scan Gauge 2 but haven't installed it yet. That enables you to monitor important things like auto transmission temperature, exhaust temp, etc & drive accordingly.

I'd suggest you have a good look at the IsuzuOz Forum.

While most members here may be satisfied with the Isuzu HD rear suspension, I'm NOT. We bought the car with the softer riding three leaf sets but *!*# Isuzu said those springs had to be replaced due to a safety issue. No problems there but they knew about the problem in early 2018 & did nothing about redesigning the dudd springs! They were quite happy to continually sell cars that had defects on them. When you go to the other forum, you'll find more of the history. So I'm seriously looking at alternatives but I don't want to spend good money & have a car still lacking. Choices at the moment are ARB, Parabolic, Green Bros (Grafton).

Hi Jim, I have the 2016 D Max, pre DPF, 5 speed Auto. I have fitted a catch can only. Upgraded the springs with Old Man Emu and new Gas Shocks gave me a 65mm lift, this being spot on for my 260kg Tow Ball weight. No WDH. Tows 2700kg exceptionally well.

From what I have read in a Isuzu D Max/Mux forum and Isuzu advertising the new engine is just that, brand new.(not the old one rehashed).  So I doubt weather anyone can accurately determine from experience, as yet, what you should do to the engine. Checking the Isuzu advertising and technical publications I cannot see anywhere a reference to a new engine, or by the same token, it being the same old engine, maybe someone can positively clarify.

were you told when you purchased the new car?

Chris.
