In 1967, we drove a Mini 850 from Adelaide to Darwin and back for our honeymoon. The Stuart Highway between Port Augusta and Alice Springs was mostly red sand. We had some Tuppaware containers with us for food. There are still one or 2 pieces left. They still have red stains.
The red stain is probably due to iron oxides (rust)
Phosphoric acid will chemically eliminate ferrous rust. You find it in products like CLR, or marketed just by name. Vinegar works, but much slower. Colas barely work (acidic). Muriatic acid (dilute hydrochloric acid) is the most effective, but is harsher. Perhaps lemon juice (citric acid).
If it has etched into the surface of the glass you may struggle to get rid of it. Be careful with some of the more extreme acids as they themselves can etch the glass.
