I have 3 relatives that are farmers. My grandparents were farmers too. What seems to have crept into their psychy  is the "if you can eat, thank a farmer" mentality. Why?

I pointed out to my farming cousins that on that basis they should thank the bearing, tyres and spate parts distributes as well for without their work farmers would grind to a stop. "Bloody city people" they say...yet their mother was saved by a city brain surgeon.  "Bloody tourists" yet their island (Tassy) would sink without them!

Another relative has a sticker on her bumper "if you can read this thank a teacher". Why? It was their chosen profession. Do we thank prison warders for keeping inmates locked away?, shop assistants, book publishers, computer technicians, pen manufacturer and so on.

Finally, as a reaction to this well- arrogance, I asked them all a question..."what is the most important job in a hospital"?.  Surgeon, doctor, nurses, and so the guessing went on. 

Nope, cleaner is my answer. Without all that sanitizing we wouldn't have as functioning hospital.

So, thank a cleaner.

One of the definitions of "civilisation" is what happened when everyone became a "specialist" and provided some product and service at a high degree of quality and efficiency not typically available to those who try to do everything.
In that regard we are all reliant on everyone else for our quality of life.

I agree with you Tony'

30 Years ago farmers were up there with Dr;s and nurses (and cleaners!)

The following happened in (about) Sept 2019 and goes something like this.......

Joe O;Brien of ABC fame does a story/in person interview with a farmer (Kevin Tongue) on his property outside Tamworth.

Joe "how long have you been in drought Kevin??"

"about 7 years" says Kevin

ABC camera man gets plenty of shots of the very dry/dusty/barren paddock the interview was taking place in........ along with cows and calves in poor condition.

Can anyone pick "the issue"???

All jobs are equally important to me as we need them all.

I often thank someone for the job they are doing. Just the other day I thanked a young girl in the supermarket, she wiped down the conveyer belt with sanitiser just before I put my things on. I said "thankyou, keep up the good work" She replied "gee, no one has ever thanked me". How sad. As an Ex Manager I always thanked my staff. It goes a long way.

"Cleaner" Sanitising Engineer. See, told ya they are important.

A big thank you to all workers but,

I often notice the if you can read this, thank a teacher right before I need to read something 10 times trying to make sense of what is written. My paraphrase is if I cannot understand what I am reading, can I blame the writers teacher?

I prefer to thank unpaid volunteers. Everyone else is doing whatever it is that they do for financial reward, not for altruistic reasons.

 

Edit: I appreciate those paid employees who put in extra effort, or who go out their way to provide better service. In particular I appreciate the health professionals who risk their lives dealing with COVID-19 and other serious diseases.
