Hi , folks...Recently retired and slowly putting life long dreams into plans/actions.

A major first step for me is to "lerk" around this site picking up ideas , or discounting myths.

Plan is to be on road for shortish trips (mostly in Victoria , if covod permits) 2nd qtr 2021 with dream goal of wandering Australia for a year or three sometime soon.

What form of travel do you intend to use....caravan, camper , motorhome, motorcycle, bicycle,  on road , off road ? ....there are lots of alternatives  and can all be enjoyed in Australia.    

Just get out there and "do it".....

So far looking at (lighter?) pop-top , mainly established campgrounds with some free camp..99% bitumen..any advise welcome , folks. Rob.

Pop tops are not usually lighter than full height vans. If you want light (and strong), check out the van manufacturers that this company supplies materials for....(as well as building vans themselves and kits, they supply panels to other manufacturers). http://vanglass.homestead.com/ Cheers, Peter

any advise welcome , folks. Rob.

Some years ago, I did the lap in an old, Viscount pop top caravan, staying in free/donation camps

I had an outside pop up tent, for my cassette toilet, and 12 volt/solar-bag shower

But...

Not knowing what the future will bring, I can only say what the near past has been

When Covid-19 lockdowns came in 2020, some free/donation camps were closed

Some, if not most Caravan Parks, only allowed self contained Caravans/RV's, as they closed the amenity blocks

Not sure if an outdoor pop up tent, will be classed as being self contained

Some overnight free camps, stipulate that you must have means, to keep your grey water onboard

Just a thought, as there are pop top caravans with onboard toilet/shower
