In the early 1980s my parents put a hot water heat pump in. It had the condenser coils (in sheet form) around the outside.

It cost a fortune back then but it did reduce electricity costs a lot. It lasted about 15 years.

A heat pump is a better system than immersion heating but personally I would never install anything with the Chromogen name (which come from Israe)l.
Even better if you combine it with a solar collector.
We turn the electrical heating power to our hot water system off for at least 6 months every year.

Just whack an Evacuated Tubing Hot Water system onto your roof....zero power bills.Apricus is a good brand,and there are many in Victoria....Cheers

We had a very similar unit and found it did save on electricity. As it turns on randomly when the water cools, we wired in a timer so it would only turn on during the day. We found ours would run between 2 - 4 hours per day. They sound like an air conditioner, but not quite as noisy.

I love my solar hot water system, 4 years I have had it now, back in August I noticed the water was not quiet as hot as normal so I rang the supplier and he asked have we switched the heater booster on, I felt a fool.

I have an Apricus Evacuated tubes Solar Hot water system. It was the smallest 10 tube house hold one I could get for average, 2 people. We do not have the electric boost turned on for about 9 months of the year, and only sometimes in winter. It cost us less then 1000 dollars fitted, at the time. I even bought a demo version 5 tube for my caravan but have not fitted it. It will be used on my cabin one day instead. It costs me no more then 15 dollars a quarter when using electric boosting. But we only turn it on when needed for a shower in cloudy weather. which is rare, because you always get some sunshine during the day.

Yes, a different brand but supplied and installed for $118 (various subsidies) about 4 or 5 years ago. Still on off peak power. Hot water costs are now very low.
