I do believe the turbo housing is too big for the motor. So if I cant get something happening over the weekend il be figuring out what turbo to try next. There are turbos for Nissan patrol sd33t which could work way better?

I hesitate to suggest this but !! If the waste gate is closed so there is no leakage, then I might disable the actuator so it will not open at all. Then with the boost gauge fitted take it for a run and see when the boost starts and how high it might get. Note you must put you foot down fully to see this, up a hill etc. Of course if the boost gets too high then back off. This will tell you if the turbo is working OK and if it is going to do what you want. If you cannot get good boost by half revs and if the boost does not go too high as the revs rise further then the turbo is not what you want. Do not blow out the gaskets by going too high a pressure.
If it is working well then you need to sort out the wastegate actuator settings and springs.

I never knew much about turbos but I definitely am understanding a lot more now.
If I can't get good boost then I have two options. Send my manifold away to a guy in Wollongong (turboglide) who does turbo installs on lots of diesel motorhomes or look at buying a turbo for a SD33T and try that. It's the closest thing I can find. Would anyone see any issues with that turbo? The garrett turbo which I have now has a 0.64a/r housing and the sd33t turbo has 0.42a/r.

isnt it possible to get the turbo model that would have originally been fitted to your motor?
I assume when you purchased the motor it didnt have a turbo with it? Would the place you purchased from have the correct unit you could buy?
It would seem to me, mechanically challenged as I am, that the best approach would be to get the unit to the spec the OEM had when they built the engine and set them up originally. You may be able to return the Garrett back to the seller as being unsuitable for your application, if it was a new unit.

Is the exhaust manifold off the N/A engine ? Some Jap engines have smaller ports on turbo exhaust manifold to assist turbo threshold, low rpm spool !! I would say the turbine is a little too big . A.R . I would advance injector pump timing 2* see what happens ??
The exhaust manifold is off the turbo motor.
I made a BIG mistake by leaving the original in my trailer and my brother emptied the trailer at the tip. So original turbo is gone
I know the original part number and can get that turbo Nissan (china and get it sent here) for $2500. Called Nissan in ACT they checked part number and quoted 3k from china import too. The turbo glide guy in Wollongong said he charges about $800 for what he puts together or $1300 for Garret one.
At this point it's either send off manifold to turboglide or buy a SD33T turbo.

Yes turbo Diesel engines require more advance so it has more time to burn fuel . Totally different near opposite to petrol engines tuning . Going by the black smoke ? Its not burning the fuel efficiently . Why it could be spooling slow ? Much the same with petrol engines ! Except diesel fuel doesnt burn in turbine the same !! The timing marks are for NA engine . Check what timing the turbo engines have ? My old 6 Fuso was advance 4* over N/A timing . TD06 .

So is this turbo indeed a AR .80?

Hi Mike....I suspect that those members who have any knowledge of turbos (I don't) have given you all the advice that they can? My suggestion would be to save yourself a lot of frustration,not to mention time and money, by consulting a genuine turbo expert in your nearest town.Good luck.Cheers

It's only a 2 hour drive from Tuggeranong to Berrima. Give them a ring and consult with them. If you can get it done in a day there is plenty to do in Berrima whilst he is doing the work. I did that myself from Kaleen.

Aspect ratio (A.R) is too big . Its like the aspect ratio with tyres . 60 - 70 series etc . Wheel trim etc comes into it also !!! Unless you go compound turbo ? Why reading a turbo map is so important !!

So I've ended up sending my exhaust manifold to turboglide and he's going to sort out the turbo. Il be sending the Garret turbo I have back.
Hopefully have something back in a week or two then chuck it on and if needed tune it.
Finally I am getting somewhere.
I installed my new turbo, got the dump pipe and exhaust hooked up and now I'm getting 5 psi boost and can get up to 100kph quite easily and 120 without too much hassle. I know there's a boost leak somewhere and I should be getting at least 8psi boost.
I'm booked into Berrima diesel to get tuned properly in 5 weeks. They said they will find any leaks and tune it to run the best it can. So I'm expecting after that I will be getting more power/ boost. Fingers crossed.
