Do I need to install another Transmission Oil Cooler

I have just recently taken possession of a New ISUZU D.MAX MY21 DUAL CAB LSM UTE. AUTO. I intend to install a Catch Can as well as a Primary Filter. I am seeking info. if other vanners have bought this new model and are currently towing with it, have they seen a need to install an extra Transmission Cooler. My new van { when it arrives } has an ATM of 2760 kls.I do most of my travels inland and at times there are long distances between towns. If you have an MY21 I would appreciate any info. you can offer re. the Cooler. I thank all for your replies to my enquiry. Safe travels to all on the road at present.

G'day RAINBIRD ROVERS,
I don't have the latest - just the MY19 model.

I do suggest you join the Isuzu Forum (www.ozisuzu.com.au/). I was reading up on that subject last night & found heaps after doing a Search. There is an ideal temperature that autos run at & it was suggested that too cold can cause issues as well as too hot. There are some chaps on the forum that know their stuff - one is an Isuzu employee & dished out some very useful info when they released the car.

I have recently fitted a Scangauge2 & have set the Xgauges to monitor Battery volts, Exhaust Gas Temp, Coolant Temp & Auto Transmission Temp. My trip home to Townsville will be interesting as I had previously thought about adding an extra cooler. As we travel to the Cold South (SW Victoria), I didn't want to cause problems. I thought the new one came with an external cooler or have I got my Ps & Qs mixed up?

By all means fit a Catch Can - some of them catch quite a bit of oil (like mine).

A friend who does a lot of inland travel & has a Land Cruiser ute has a "WaterWatch" on his engine. It doesn't restrict the fuel but detects moisture.

It doesnt hurt an auto to run warm or cooler, keep in mind in most cases its cooled from engines coolant ! But if they run too much over 100* the ATF breaks down very quick ! Requiring more servicing . At times engine temp can reach 100* ., this doesnt leave any window for the auto cooling . If the extra cooler is thought to over for it ? Remember the engines coolant keeps ATF warm !!

Hi Rainbird I have a 2017 MUX, the best thing I have put on is the scangauge, it will let you know if you need a trans cooler or not, I have one but depends on what you are towing. Ian

Hi again RAINBIRD,
I have just returned home from down south. Now this is my experience since fitting the scanguage.
I will be fitting a cooler soon - the temperature sat between 90 & 111 degrees & this was with ambient temperatures ranging from 27 to 38 degrees ( the 111 was on a cool day of 27 degrees ambient & in tropical rain) courtesy of the tropical low off Cairns.

Since arriving home & removing the van, the transmission hasn't gone over 70 degrees. Daytime temps at the moment are up to 28.

Cheers.

Cheers for all the info. I have just had a Catch-Can and a Primary Filter fitted on Thursday and have already decided to have a transmission cooler fitted. Best to be on the safe side and not the sorry side. Trust all is well and stay safe.

I put a PWR cooler on my Disco, I also added a Derale 80deg thermostat, so the auto just uses the OE cooler until it hits 80 and then the second opens.

I have a Pajero and fitted a torque converter lock up kit. This kit has dramatically lowered the auto temps when towing. It has also helped fuel consumption. Have had it installed for several years now and been a godsend. Many other Pajero owners have also fitted this kit. The bloke who developed it only has several models for a couple of Mitsubishi models. . A lot of development went into the kit and it is worth it! There has been no negative feed back (and the many Pajero owners who have the kit are extremely p[leased with it. Combined with an Ultragauge it makes towing and everyday driving so much easier.

Hi Dicko1. Welcome.

Would that lockup kit by any chance be an MM 4x4?

It certainly is. I had one of the first ones and find it a fantastic device. Transmission temps stay in the 70w 70,s and I nearly always tow in Drive. Its almost like having a manual gearbox. . It is very user friendly and very programmable. The latest version is even better. The other good thing is that you can pull the unit out (simple) and send it back to have the latest functions installed for a small fee. Anyone owning a Pajero and towing will definitely benefit.

It could be argued that the 2021 Isuzu and other utes don't have an oil cooler just a heat exchanger, many experts say to put a separate oil cooler in place. Just check on Warranty issues if any. Below is a link explaining many issues.
