A friend of mine was a close friend of his. He was a troubled soul. Comedy was his escape.

It seems that depression has affected quite a few comedians.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_O%27Donoghue#Death

"[O'Donoghue's daughter Jessica] stated that he had been undergoing treatment for depression and mental illness, and had taken his own life in hospital."

Spike Milligan was also affected by mental illness.

Correct Dorian

Norman suffered a completed mental breakdown (I believe he was on a small boat at the time). Many entertainers not only comedians have issues like bipolar, depression and others. Stephen Fry has bipolar, Vincent Van Gogh, Winston Churchill to name a few and many explorers had ADHD with incredible drive and determination with excess energy.

I saw Gary McDonald live in a workers club somewhere. He also did a character called Phil A. Stein, supposedly the entertainment manager of the club. I didn't recognise him at first. Very funny.

Oh, and thanks Recoup, I wasted all yesterday afternoon watching YouTube comedy sketches. You well and truly sucked me in.

Robin Williams was another comedian with sad issues. By the way Gary McDonald was/is an avid train nut. Just a bit of trivia.

Yes I remember Norman Gunston, (Gary McDonald)

I did read somewhere that he was on the board of Beyond Blue, for a time

Hope that he gets over his depression
