Welcome to GN's KymLou, Unfortunately I don't know enough about Sat-phones to comment other than to question whether you actually need one. They are expensive to operate and rarely needed unless going extremely remote, Telstra Blue Tick phones have a pretty good coverage.

Possum, you are,of course, absolutely right. Although I do carry an Inmarsat phone,a Blue Tick phone with Celfi Go gets coverage most places. You can buy good Blue Tick phones very cheaply.Recently I bought one for a friend who was bleating about lack of coverage in the bush with his iPhone, and that he needed a "...Blue Tick flip phone",so I bought him one. Now,I am stuck with it as he decided that he had "...got used to the iPhone". There now are 4 new mobile phones sitting in my cupboards! Cheers
P.S My Inmarsat phone can apparently receive calls from a standard mobile phone, with the caller being charged only standard mobile call rates. The idea is that if I wish to speak to someone,I simply send a text, asking them to call me?
We bought a Thursday XT Lite as insurance. In remote places even on major highways, there is often absolutely no Telstra signal so no amount of boosting or special phone model will help you.
The Thuraya sat phone works ok; just a bit clunky to operate. Especially sending SMS. We are currently in the Kimberleys and signal is good. It was ok in SE Qld (home) but more touchy about antenna orientation. I expect it would be worse in Vic or Tas.
Im wondering if any one has one of these external antenna for the xt lite or satsleeve as the dish type one made by Scan that i have, sold by pivotel needs to be tipped north towards the satellite nnw for full service bars. www.clientsat.com.au/thuraya-antenna-kit/ any feed back would be welcone. The seller states it will out performed both Scan brand dish and marine antenna
