Box for air compressor

Howdy,

I have been looking for a box to hold my air compressor (for 4wd) with little success. I have searched in tool boxes, ammo boxes and battery boxes and cannot find the size I want, or need. Anyone have any ideas?

The size of the compressor is 370 long  x 150 wide x 230 high.

These measurements are "tight" so I guess I am looking for something around 400 x 155 x 250.

These sizes need to be internal measurements at the bottom of the box/container; many battery boxes have similar measurements at the top but the boxes taper to the bottom so the bottom measurements are too small.

Any ideas?

Orana

I keep mine in its original cardboard box & plastic case that it fits into. Yes, the box is a bit rubbed in places but it's still in one piece.
I bought it locally in 1992 after an el-cheapo gave up on our Cape trip.

Make one? Okay if you are handy with wood. I'm not.

As to the cardboard box? Mine came in a cotton/canvas bag and I want something a bit more substantial to house it.

Take the measurements and drawing of what you would like to a MensShed and see if they can possibly help.

I have some of these storage containers in various sizes.

Or you could stick it under the seat or in the boot, on a quick release bracket.

About the festool boxes: thanks for the link. I had a look and they're out of my price range.

About the men's shed: I had considered that but I wasn't sure if they made items for non-members. I also thought I wanted something made from (ABS) plastic but as I have't had any luck finding what I want, I think the local men's shed may be a good option.

ABS is closely related to PVC both are a brittle plastic always go with PE.

Take a look in BigW, Kmart, Bunnings and similar, I suspect they will have a plastic box of appropriate dimensions. I use such boxes a lot and find them both versatile and handy.

Makita make a larger box, Type-4, for $47. You can fit your hoses & tyre repair kit in it as well, spanners etc. All these tool boxes are really well made. I actually had some Bosch boxes but chucked them out as all the storage I have is in the festool boxes simply out of easy with what I had set up.

Mike, all plastic boxes will deteriorate and become brittle. A simple Aluminium box can be made using aluminium flat sheet, angle & pop-rivets - put a hinged lid on it same method. Alum box can now be packed allowing something to be placed on top.

I carry mine in a tool-box bought as a (nesting) set of three at supercheap, Trolley jack fits in large one, tools in mid-size & air compressor - tyre gauge - tyre repair kit in smallest one.

3 or 4mm or so of UPVC would be fine and it is easily glue-able using MEK. Same with ABS. You can not glue PE, but it is hot air weldable and hot bendable.

A 20L plastic jerry can is pretty close to the required size.
Cut a slice off and re attach with some hinges and a catch.

All plastics are not the same and many will last for decades.

Cheers,
Peter

A repurposed water container. The 15L horizontal ones maybe large enough.

Crap for my compressor!

My thanks to everyone who replied.

I had a look at, and bought the makita-makpac-connector-carry-case-type-3-1970521; just perfect.

Cheers.

Finally upgraded my aftercooler for drying compressor air. So, now with forced air cooling & dropping the aftercooler in the freezer, other than a final desiccant dryer which would then require a dust filter, it should be a fairly good setup (just need a couple of fan guards).

A lot better set up compared to the manual Octuple maximum output compressor for luddites.

If you're having trouble finding a ready-made box for your air compressor, consider getting a custom rigid box made to your specifications. You can have a custom rigid box designed to the exact internal measurements you need, around 400 x 155 x 250, ensuring a perfect fit without the issue of tapering sides. This way, you can protect your compressor and have a box that meets your exact requirements.
