Today I began hearing moe than I'm used too, I had a hearing test a couple of weeks ago, I knew that I had some hearing loss since the early 70's mostly high range now its even greater so a pair of hearing aids were ordered.
Today I walked out of the store with my new aids in and I was was hit with a wall of noise from within the shopping center, even hearing multiple conversation comming from various directions. Next getting into the car the engine was making noises that I have not from this ute, even the the ticking of the indicators when turning was something I havnt heard for yonks.
Note to self I you are going into a big shopping center " turn Aids off " the wall of noise is gone.
Years ago when I got my first lot of hearing aids the audio bloke said to me, you will never believe it when you have your first pee in toilet after having these in, it will sound like the Niagra Falls. He wasn't wrong there but he forgot to say what a loud fart would sound like. Sometimes they sound very loud

I'm in the same situation as you Gundog, had hearing aids fitted/set up about a week ago.
First hearing Specialist that I saw said the hearing loss typically occurred within the frequencies that are in the range of low women's voices. I don't know whether is hereditary trait for survival of old men or a way of getting them killed off.
I had mine fitted a fortnight ago, the bloke said had I done it earlier, my hearing would have been much better today. Apparently, getting hearing aids earier, are as muxch as a preventative, then as a cure. I have not been using them like I should, they are set right, but hearing every ticking noise in the engine, does put you off, not to mention, loud noises, that scream at you, like loud motorbikes, it just hurts the ears. I can hear everything with them now, as I have 2, but find I actually prefer, quietness. I mainly got them for my bike riding, as I was finding it very hard to hear a car, or truck coming up behind me, and in some situations, was bailing out too late, to get away from them. Will probably only use them whilst riding.
Yesterday was a new experiance, we went up for happy hour I didnt have my aids in, missing much of the conversation going on so I decided to go back to the van and put my aids in.
Returning to the happy hour its amazing hear many of the conversations, alas there is a down side 2 of the participants had extremly loud voices and the constant chatter was becoming too much, so I moved a bit back for the main group. Stting back there in quiet conservation with one of the group was more relaxing when another joined our conservaton, I asked him if his loud voiced mate came with a volume control, the response was a laugh yes it increases with each drink was the reply.
I will have to learn how to decrease the volume on my aids on the fly, when in large gatherings or just leave the aids out and become partially oblivious to most conservations.
I have read articles where research has shown that improved hearing helps reduce the onset of dementia. Also by having the auditory senses being active by using the hearing aids, the neurons remain intact. As mentioned in some of the posts, the social benefits are there too. Keep wearing them but get good ones so to be comfortable with them.

A few years ago we go cold calls to get our hearing tested, obviously to sell expensive hearing aids.
My hearing was so good that I could calibrate the machine. I could see that they were pissed off. I could have actually done better as their setup was a joke. The setup gave indications designed to get readings in their favour to flog off hearing aids.
The only bad thing to come out of this, is that I cannot say I didn't hear Wifey!
While at it.
A colour blindness test. You really should have a hardware (which I have) calibrated screen, but it will give you some indication.
I do have a good rear mirror fitted, but it is down on the only place it could really fit, the bottom of the drop handlebars, so not as good as some positions, so only glance at it once every few minutes, then On top of that, am due new glasses. When turning around to see a vehicle behind me, I lose perspective due to the frames blocking the vehicles. Riding a bike going on trips, was never a hassle when I was younger, but back then even though the roads were narrower, the drivers had manners, today they are too rushed to care about bikes on the road.
