Haven't been up that way since 2013, through Armidale, Belligen, etc - I doubt the hill have improved much but a pleasant enough drive with van on back if you take your time, keeping engine and transmission cool. As Possum said, Waterfall Way is as good a run as any. Just treat the descent from Dorigo with respect, shift into a low enough gear to keep the engine revs above 3,000 RPM to assist your brakes. There are a couple of single lane sections but you can see the whole length of each, just take things slowly.

That will take you a bit over 4 driving hours. The alternative is 7 hours via Newcastle or 6 hours with a steep descent through Grafton. Ignore any other route that Google Maps throws up, they are rather interesting routes to say the least.
