We usually, after a check around , insure or two cars with AAMI. On reading latest PDS it says in "what we do not insure " damage from asbestos".
What would this mean to you?
Me, If an asbestos watermain burst?, If an asbestos roof fell onto my car? Plenty of both still out there. I did not consider carting loose or wrapped asbestos within either car.
So finally got a response.
Thanks for your reply.
In relation to your query about damage caused by asbestos, the intention of this exclusion is in relation to damage caused from asbestos contaminating your vehicle when you have been carrying asbestos in the insured vehicle or if your vehicle has been exposed to asbestos which warrants repair.
If your vehicle is hit by a piece of asbestos that has been blown by the wind then you are covered as this is an impact that has occurred to your car. We don't exclude damage because the impact was caused by a piece of debris that happened to be asbestos. Similarly, if an asbestos pipe burst causing water damage you are covered for the water damage that has resulted to your vehicle.
The types of damage that you have mentioned are damages caused which are out of your control, whereas carrying asbestos in your vehicle or leaving your vehicle in a site exposed to asbestos which could cause damage etc are situations that are avoidable or in your control so any damages caused wouldn't be covered under your policy.
As such, the exclusion of asbestos is correct and whether the exclusion applies depends on the circumstances surrounding the loss.
I hope that this helps to clarify the situation for you and if we can be of any further assistance please feel free to call our office on 13 22 44 8.00am to 10.00pm (AEST) 7 days a week or reply to our email and well be more than happy to assist.
AAMI are owned by AAI who control a large section of car insurance. No affiliation, but they do stand by lifetime repair guarantee, at least for me.
This may be related to an issue a few years back when there was recall of a Chinese made ute (Great Wall, I *think*) which had used an exhaust gasket containing asbestos.
