Savvy Level or Spirit Level

I normally only ensure the pull out kitchen is level. A few beers and sleep is no problems.....I,m not interested in the $300 job...I,ll wait until the $700 model comes out and it gives me bragging rights around the camp fire.......

Small levels are notoriously inaccurate .as they only level the actual short piece they sit on . If a builder turned up to do your house brickwork or foundations and used one of these silly little plastic things what would you say!! Well, as your Aussies probably not much . Ha Ha .

As a tradesman, you should know that the bubble tubes in the levels are all much the same. All the long length of the level does is allow you to level across a longer span. Chipies can get away a much shorter length of level than brickies as a short length level can be mated to straight pieces of timber and be as accurate as you would be in that situation. Those who work with metal frames can get the same accuracy with pocket length levels as they will line up with a good straight piece of metal as your longer one will. All three levels will have similar bubble tubes thus produce the same accuracy.

If you can get your van level with a good long level and then accurately secure the bubble tubes to indicate the van is level, you then have a very long level. The result will be a lot longer than any level you can carry.

Caravan fridges do not have to be super level for the fridge to operate at its maximum efficiency. The best level to use with Dometic fridges is the bullseye ones they used to supply with their fridges. They have a green circular spot in the middle with a raised bit in the middle of that. Put that on the floor of the freezing compartment. If some of the bubble is within the green patch the fridge will work OK. If the whole of the bubble is within the green area the fridge will work to its full specification. I have found that the level gives the same indication when I put it on the floor just inside the door so that is where I now use it.

One thing I have found out is that if I have the fridge on an angle at the limit of operation, the navigator complains the van is not level enough for her.

There is no point in you attempting to belittle the others with your superiority.

Other half complains that it's not level. At times I have contemplated using a water level!

Good catch Dorian :)

Buy hey! Don't knock it, many years ago I lost a lucrative sale because I seriously underestimated the desire of my potential customer to buy a "gadget" with lots of useless bells, whistles and flashing lights.

Yep, a length of clear plastic tubing.

Years ago I put in two 5000L water tanks. I wanted them as level as possible to get every last litre of water in them. I use a length of plastic tubing. It worked a treat & got the height with a couple of mm.

I at least use a 1.2m level

Well yes Andy, I tend to agree.  But having glued my small T level to the chassis, I reckon my level is now 9 metres long measured one way, and about 2 metres long measured the other. And if anyone rips the bubble out of their own level it'll turn up about the size of the Bunnings item.  Just saying.

It is critical you turn the spirit level 180° to reduce level errors. The same as you would for a dumpy level. A photographic scene is generally too far away.

When I purchased my 'long level' I tested almost the ebtire stock at our local big green shed by selecting a suitable piece of shelving frame and checking it for level and then reversing the level looking for the same result.

Eventually I found one that was correct & I was only looking at the more expensive brand name ones.

For those with a Fifth Wheeler - (mounted under the Gooseneck ) this is easy , quick and all round user friendly (no bending over, unpacking  or winding) ....... 2 fixed levels (adjustable) at eye level - 1 longways - 1 crossways , suspension airbag controls and electric landing  leg controls all  at hand height .  When  parking  I can generally have the van level before my wife gets to open the van door !

Sorry for "sideways" pic.....

The 'T' level works for me. The hinged metal lid prevents damage by stones and UV.

Retired Brickie doesnt matter 2 or 4 (600 or 1200mm) all the same its the idiot that is reading it.
Just buy a fridge that works efficiently at upto 30% (compressor). The sun does effect bubble levels
Always replaced my 4 (1200mm) every 12mths.

Never have van setup level always low on right side for water tanks and high in front cause cant
sleep with my head down. Only kept my 2 (600mm) as Id look like an idiot dragging out a 4 level
to set up a van.

Other half complains if there is a pea under the mattress. So I might get a precision 0.01mm per metre level.
