Just to clarify a few things. As said you must only have the meter clamp around one of the wires when reading. If you have it around both active and neutral they cancel out. So some fiddling with the wires may be required SO BE CAREFUL.
Secondly I assume you are not working in a power station so the amp range, 200A and 1000A is rather large for normal use. Measuring a household appliance of say ~1000 watts will only give ~ 5+Amps so even on the 'small' 200A range it may not be a good reading.
A better option is one of those meters that you can get to look at the power use of appliances in the home. It just plugs into the power point and the appliance plugs into its socket. You just scroll through the readings with no danger at all. We can borrow one at our library.
