Jayco Quality Again


Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I did a search and couldn't find the answer.

.Stripped out mates wheel bearings yesterday,  regreased with new seals. Did left ones first, and upon doing the right side it was evident from the lack of wear on magnet and drum that the right hand side brakes have never worked. 2018 Outback 23 foot. Due to time constraints I couldn't look any further other than I could see they were plugged in. I am now back in Bridgetown and asking if anyone has seen this fault before and where the problem may be.

Are you saying that this is the first time in 3 years that the bearings and brakes have been serviced ?
Our Jayco was assembled using high quality bearings, and the brakes are of top quality.

Hi Stretch,
1. "Jayco Quality Again" - is that warranted? It could happen to bigger, heavier & far more expensive vans!

2. Often doing a Advanced Search (accessible when you hit the Search tab) may find what you're looking for.

3. Check where the wire comes from the magnet & goes through the backing plate & meeting the chassis wiring - that is one common trouble spot or if there is another junction elsewhere.

4. Service intervals are normally 10,000kms or 12 months - in my case, I do around 15-20,000 a year - casual use!

I thought checking operating temps of drums & hubs was a standard check when pulling a van....... I travel mostly by myself. Before a trip I hold the brake pedal down with a piece of timber between the seat & pedal, then walk around the van to make sure the brake magnets are humming.......... I like to know the van brakes are going to work...... I'm on my second Jayco 1 new, 1 second hand, can't fault quality or service.

Thank you all for your comments, wasn't meaning to totally bag out Jayco, but it's not the first time I have heard this on Jayco. And it's true about the service interval, however mate purchased second hand private and has only done short runs. He is off to shark Bay next week, first big trip hence wheel bearing check.
I will pass on your suggestions to mate as I won't make it back to Perth before he leaves.

This fault does not surprise me. I had a faulty magnet from new. Sometimes they just don't work or only weak.

Best check is after some brake use, pull over and all should be hot/warm and approx same temperature. I do this at least once every trip.

Another simple test is to jack up the van and have someone apply the brakes or press the controller button. But the above test is far superior.

I have to admit, i heard of the problem of stones smashing the connecting plugs on the brake units. The first thing I did was protect the wiring and plugs with split conduit tubing. Servicing intervals should be 12 monthly, in fact I believe from my early experiences, a piece of equipment that is not used, is more likely to be faulty than a well used item. Owner service can be the go, even if its a jack up the wheel and give the wheel a spin, listen and feel.

Our 2007 Sterling has now done atleast 100,000 klms. We haven't experienced this problem. It hasn't ever had a professional service. My train driver/truckie hubby has always looked after the van .But then His brand new Acco truck must have been built on a Friday when they come off the assembly line in 1987 Australia. An absolute lemon! Even need a respray at 3 months old.
Would bore you to tears with al the problems the truck had! Pure luck when buying anything!

Hi Stretch,


2018 Outbacks are usually fitted with 12" Off Road type drum brakes that work reasonable well, so I am surprised there was not some evidence that the RH brakes were inoperative.

Usually if brakes on only one side of the van work, there is a reduction in overall braking efficiency, and also a force exerted on the caravan drawbar (that can be felt in the tow vehicle) trying to move the tug left or right. Maybe ask you friend if he noticed these symptoms so he knows what to look for next time.

i had a similar problem on 2019 outback/journey, 300klms from home pulled oer checked van hubs , one was to hot to touch other was much cooler to touch, RACV toed to ARB/mechanical repairs at nearby town, they said they see this problem often, they replaced the brake components/magnets at a cost of$550. after 10000klms later one side is getting very hot again. van is going to Jaco repair this wednes day if COVID ALLOWES. ps-- THIS WAS THE FIRST BIG TRIP I HAVE DONE IN THE VAN.

i had a similar problem on 2019 outback/journey, 300klms from home pulled over checked van hubs , one was to hot to touch other was much cooler to touch, RACV toed to ARB/mechanical repairs at nearby town, they said they see this problem often, they replaced the brake components/magnets at a cost of$550. after 10000klms later one side is getting very hot again. van is going to Jaco repair this wednes day if COVID ALLOWES. ps-- THIS WAS THE FIRST BIG TRIP I HAVE DONE IN THE VAN.

Jayco have a dedicated fabrication shop to manufacture their own chassis, on their site at Dandenong, in Victoria.

Silverlines are fitted with Alko brake components, as are most other caravans sold in Australia.

You can take a factory tour of the facility.

It appears that your van may still have been under warranty, in any event, I believe Jayco would have attended to your problem under warranty had you asked. My van came with roadside assist and 2 year warranty. did yours not include this...?

Jayco are without quibble the best caravan manufacturer I have dealt with for after sales service, and I am onto my 7th Van. This includes some so called manufacturers of quality vans.

Have no commercial interest with Jayco, so far just a satisfied customer.

Stretch60- A fair question but a very unfair heading- "Jayco quality again". I've owned 2 Jayco's over a period of about 10 years with few problems. I find the heading insulting!

What annoying heading.

We have a 2012 Concept which I purchased in 2016 with one trip to Melbourne from Newcastle under it's belt, low ks, notice not far from picking it up that the brakes were not working. For some unknown reason the wires had come detached. 

I would argue black and blue our Concept is still one of the best made caravans on the market but we have met Jayco owners who put a good discussion of why they own a Jayco, even met some who have owned multiple Jayco.

Hi bomurra, im hoping the van will be covered by warranty for the thetford fridge that stopped working but not sure about the brakes as they were attended to by ARB as it was only way we could continue our trip, the canopy canvas has separated from the drum for approx 7cm, hope they cover that, and the gas pipe from bottle runs through the inside of drawbar rubbing on the metal shelf/drawbar which im hoping they will cover as well, ive wrapped a piece of rubber over the pipe which seems to be doing a good job so far.

My experience with Jayco so far has been excellent, not that we have had many problems. 

If you are unable to to get the response you desire from the service dealer, contact Jayco Warranty department directly.

Stretch: My experience with Jayco was not good, but that was 21 years ago, and hopefully things have improved a bit since then (don't hold your breath). At the time, Jayco warranty was "2 years" or 20000 km (how they measured that I will never know).

I had a major problem with the axle on my 16.5 ft poptop. It wore out the inside edge of the tyres in about 18000 km because there was 10 mm toe-out on the axle. Jayco flatly refused to entertain warranty, even though it was only 18 months old. They said that the axle was not warranted by them.  AL-KO (the axle manufacturer) warranted the axle for 12 months or 12000 km. On reading the warranty closer, it seems that everything on the van, except the van itself, was warranted by the individual component manufacturer. the fridge, the stove, range hood, lighting system - everything was not covered by Jayco. I did have a win of sorts, because Jayco had assembled the axle about 20 mm offset, so that the U bolts on the left side had hit and dented the chassis member. Service Manager reluctantly accepted that as a Jayco warranty item. There is a lot more to this story, but eventually he decided to accept the axle and send it back to AL-KO for them to repair. He had to do something because I had brought the axle from Cooma to Dandenong in my trailer and parked the trailer hard against the door of their showroom so that anyone trying to get in or out of the showroom had to climb in and out of my trailer, dodging the axle as well... I was not happy at all.

I complained because I reckoned that the strength of the chassis member had been compromised. The Service Manager started by telling me that he was a qualified Mechanical Engineer, hoping that would scare me off. I replied (truthfully) that I also was a fully qualified Mechanical Engineer, so we could talk technical terms which both of us would understand. He offered a compromise to strengthen the chassis rail where it was dented. This involved welding plates on the sides of the chassis rail, and whilst this would work in a fashion, it was by no means a good repair proposition. The dent is still there and as far as I can tell, has not moved any more, but I haven't really bashed the van very much since then either.

So have a close read of the warranty on your caravan. If they haven't changed things, it will say something like all ancillaries are covered by their manufacturer's warranty. Jayco warranty is not worth the paper it is printed on.

Electric brakes usually 'hum' when in use. First way to tell if either side is at least working is to listen at the wheel. Or.... Jack it up and try to turn it. I can't imagine towing with just one brake working, the Van would pull to the left or right. Mine did it when we bought it but that was only adjustment.
