Winton to Boulia and Alice springs

we will be in Emerald Qld and  thinking on traveling to Alice springs via Boulia and then the plenty hwy, could someone give me an idea of  road conditions is it single lane bitumen Winton to Boulia or is it gravel road ,we done the plenty hwy about 15 years ago is still the same , if its pretty bad with it being so busy with bash just finished maybe we should go around through mt isa to Stuart hwy

regards Bill

Welcome to GN's Bill - We haven't gone that route this century so I looked it up see www.macdonnellranges.com/Plenty-Highway-visitors-information-guide.htm

Do your checks at Boulia. They will be a little more switched on regarding the roads further out than the Winton mob. If you are going to continue on and go via the Barkly then the road is all bitumen via Boulia, it's 40% longer to Mt Isa but you will not regret going that way. The change of scenery will add pleasure to your trip.
