I am looking at a Swagman signature 1998 with a 4hgi 4.6 engine. I have heard they are a bit sluggish so was thinking of adding a turbo charger.Any thoughts. thanks
Hi Beaver,
I've had no experience with your engine but when I had our GQ Patrol with the 4.2L diesel & bought our Jayco camper trailer, I was looking for more power.
Some said turbo it, some didn't. I eventually went to Gas Injection that solved my problem but the company has now gone out of business (Diesel Gas Australia).
I was led to believe that an engine that was built to take a turbo had different water jackets, etc to take the extra power. Jaahn might disagree - I'd take advice from those who have worked on both types of engines.

Usually things like oil squatters, intercooler, extra ring gap . But modest power is easy. Dont get greedy . I bought a gas kit from the states . Havnt fitted it yet !! From memory a little change from $500..

Hi Beaver
Yes go for a turbo it will be OK those engines are reliable. As said above do not go for excessive boost and you should not have any problems. IMHO Get some business that knows what they are doing. Give the cooling system a flush and check over.
But maybe just buy it and see how it goes. You might be happy with just driving normally a bit slower than the speed limit in a big vehicle and looking at the scenery.
Thanks very much for your replies and information. I am going through a reputable experienced business who have said up to 30% more oomph and are aware of not pushing it as to damage motor. Or maybe we will just cruise along and check out the scenery.
Cheers
Andrew
I had 100 series 4.2 naturally aspirated diesel that I got Berrima Diesel to fit a turbo for me. I was working in the Pilbara at the time but doing a trip to Tassie so it fitted in well. They were excellent to deal with and I was very happy with the result. Might be worth having a talk with them seeing as you are in Sydney.
