CHEAP SCREEN DOOR CLOSER

I have made a screen door closer for about $9 for our pop top Roadstar. I fitted a new second hand door with the security door, I wanted to have an automatic closer for the screen door part.

Started with a piece of white plastic pipe from Bunnings, 21mm o.d. with one 90 deg bend and one T piece,

some shock cord 5mm dia and some bolts and steel tube about 10 mm od to allow the shock cord to not be frayed.

I know there are commercial ones available but not for $9 and some lock down time.

Mounted across the door so I could stretch 4 runs of the cord to the door post, with a clamp after a mount so as to be able to stretch and get the right tension so the door closed from fully opened without slamming too hard. I will tie off and trim cord after a few more tests closes and a bit of lock down time. This works like a dream. see pics.

Pics show how I assembled the parts.

I have heaps more mods I must post sometime.

Wow! It looks good and simple enough to do - does it close with a BANG if not held back?

It is closing soft enough to not slam loud, I think the light weight and surface area is enough to bring it to a quiet but solid close on the latch, to stop the door latching to the outer door when pushed open I put a wine bottle cork in the slot of the outer door so the handle hits the cork and then the door can close, that is if you could find an unused wine bottle cork in a caravan park, especially around happy hour, I had to steal my sister and brother in laws cork so they had to resort to drinking the whole bottle.

I tried to put a video on this reply but it may not be allowed. It would not load, too big prob.

If there is room fit a few Blum door shock absorbers. Top, bottom & middle.

It does not need the Blum door shock absorbers, it closes very well, as I said the fact the door is light and air resistance is just enough to close on the latch without a loud bang etc.

Thanks for the advice, but I think they would stop the door from latching properly by closing too slow at the last minute. I am very happy with the way it works

These are very light to push in at a slow rate to the closed position, a bit like a car shock absorber if you press hard they do not push in much quicker. These ones are drilled into the kitchen cupboard carcuss. They make others that screw onto the surface. Great for people who are incapable of closing a door quietly. On heavy doors you need a couple of them.
