For some time I have struggled to understand the BOM's Doppler wind radar. I am well familiar with the Doppler effect and the physics of such but have trouble making sense of the radar images however this explanation makes thing much clearer to me:
Thanks Mike, very useful. I am a frequent viewer of the BOM weather radar but had not noticed the Doppler Wind link on that page. Note that not all radar stations have it.
Just browsing around some different locations I note that it does not work very well unless it is raining. For example, this Canberra one only seems to display the wind where it is currently raining. Sydney shows nothing, although their Current Observations page shows about 8-10 knots.
