Conspiracy theorists.

I've been doing some reading on the psychological characteristics of  people susceptible to conspiracy theories, interesting stuff, I had a feeling there would be common characteristics and this certainly seems to be the case.

For those who would like to read more here is a link to the article i am quoting https://www.technologynetworks.com/neuroscience/news/these-are-the-most-common-traits-of-conspiracy-theorists-345553

There's an enormous amount of reading material available, most of it echoing similar sentiments.

It's seems that in times of crisis (Covid 19, US election) people are more likely to embrace conspiracy theories.

"Conspiracy theorists typically:

  • tend to have a little less education.
  • more often live in societies that have less successful democracies, which influences trust in others and in the authorities.
  • belong to groups that feel they should have more power and influence.
  • belong to special political organizations or religious groups a little more often.
  • more often use intuition - their "gut feeling" - when making decisions.
  • see connections more often than most people do, also where such connections do not exist, and they are more likely to see intention as the cause of events.
  • are a little more narcissistic and paranoid than others.
  • more often obtain their information from social media."

Slightly OT, but we do have another brain in our gut.

Its a common expression, widely understood by most.

And for the few that don't,

Gut feeling:

Meaning. a personal, intuitive feeling. an instinctive feeling, without any logical rationale. an intuition about something.

Hope that helps.confuse

Whilst I think it important to reject the concept the Earth is being run by Martians selectively implanted amongst us and similar things it is a fact that sometimes conspiracy theories have some validity... as Richard Nixon discovered.

Or do you, Santa, reject every conspiracy theory out of hand?

What I'm saying is there is something in the psychological make up of  conspiracy theorists that makes them receptive to whatever lunacy is presented to them without any rational thought or investigation, if its on the interweb thing it must be true.wink

Yeh, the moral police are active already

I found some people are simply anti Govt.  Anti vaccinations, anti climate change, anti everything.

One friend is anti vaccinations "you don't know what you put in your body". As he puff away at 40 cigs  a day.

In my opinion

I believe that a gut feeling can go either way, depending on previous knowledge, you already had

To take just one conspiracy theory, that President Kennedy was not killed by Oswald, working on his own

Back in that time I was a teenager, living in England

I had a gun, (210 shotgun), and was an invited friend of a member, of a local gun club, so I knew just a little about guns

They had found the gun, which was suppose to have been used, to kill the President, and had not yet picked up Oswald

A man, (supposed to be high up in the British military), came on the English telly, with the same brand of gun, that had been found

This expert claimed, that this type of gun was known as a "Saturday night special"

It was not known to be able to shoot, the amount of bullets, in that time frame, at a moving target, very accurately

The official verdict is that President Kennedy, was shot by Oswald, who was working alone

My gut feeling, tells me that this is wrong, due to the type of gun, which was supposed to have been used

You are correct rgren, I should have gone to specsavers, or at least, read what was written before posting

It was about 58 years ago, yes a 410 shot gun

I like it!! good humour. The .410 is the only shotgun bore to be listed as a rifle/handgun calibre re bore dia, all the rest are by balls to the pound of lead.

Tony Bev as far as I'm aware the only firearm referred to as a friday or saturday night special (americanism) is the snub nosed .38 Special revolver.

Hi Peter (Peter 67)

I am sure that the expert on the telly, said something about it was available as a cheap mail order rifle

I could be wrong, but I thought that he did mention something, about it being a Saturday night special

I suppose he was trying to point out, that there were more expensive rifles, that were a lot more accurate, than the rifle he had in his hands

It was a 6.5 mm ex Italian military Mannlicher-Carcano with a scope sight, reputed to be reasonably accurate, accurate enough obviously.

Their was a conspiracy going around in our local council elections, that a dog had been put up to run in the election. Now the story goes, in info after the election that the dog got 216 votes. The possibly soon to be council persons name was written down as his initial only, so it was M. My Name. Now they wanted to known his first name, so it was put in as Milo. My Name. No one clicked and the day of the election he won 216 votes, he was 56 votes shy of being elected. His ticket was freedom for dogs, To stop being known as being in ownership of a said owner, so to be an independent dog in their own right, That dogs must be cared for properly, that is fed and housed appropriately, and the right to run free on the towns ovals. And that cats have to be registered, and not allowed to run free at all. This last one was he doesn't  really like cats, so wanted them hobbled. It was only found out on election day that Milo was a dog. It just tells you who could possibly be elected into council or govt. Most of his voters were in agreement  about cats.

How's this for a conspiracy theory. Someone asked elsewhere about why Canberra has no cases of COVID. Parliament is sitting ATM thats why.

So, I suppose that there won't be any until thats over. Then Canberra will succumb. Couldn't inconvenience the pollies and hangers on. Imagine if they were forced to lock down?

Lockdown will wait until they have all gone back to their respective states. Just a hypothetical.
