Do not use diesel to restart the chip heater if it has gone out but still embers, bloody hell , sh.t everywhere, blew the top off, chimney off, ashes in the bathwater and over me, sh.t scared at 8 years old.

Well Craig I believe you ! Despite the other 'experts' here it is a simple case of how not to do it. Like an 8 year old might do. Put a low flammability liquid on hot coals and they change to a very highly flammable gas and WOOSHhmm

I grew up with a chip heater and still remember stoking it with paper strips and kindling. Who needed electricity. But mum would shout out when the windows started to pulse with the chip heater biggrin

Thanks Jaahn, we had electricity, but not a hot water service in those days, and from recollection the bath had started to fill with cold water because the so a so chip heater had gone out, well nearly. We used to take the diesel from a 5 gallon drum on the back bench, used an old enamel jug. Drum only ever contained diesel.

Lol yep it sure can be a scary sound, diesel in it's raw state although flammable it's far less so than petrol however add heat, pressure or both and it's far more dangerous than petrol. add diesel to the wood then add the wood to the fire but don't close the door then open the breather fully for quick ignition.

Yep even Coke with plenty of air gets hot enough to melt steel ! Forge . Diesel thrown on open fire wont explode !! It simply doesnt evaporate fast enough !
