Overweightedness my goodness

Normally I would let Yobarr answer a question of tare weights but I happen to have it here:

New Age Big Red - 23-feet en suite bunk beds: 2800KG.

The towing maximum for the latest Ford Territory is 2700KG, up from 2300KG for earlier models. (Now someone will say: "But we don't know what year his Territory is.")

Yobarr, what is the weight of "stuff". You wouldn't make a barrister but you remind people all the time about "simple facts".

I might just post a pic of my rig. People guess the caravan weighs tare around 1200kg and atm 1600kg.

It's 730kg tare/1000kg atm ..  16x7ft. and towed by a car that appears 1938 vintage many assume has a low hp engine. It has Holden v6 3800cc engine.

Now wonder how many take pics and /or have the urge to report mine to police? Instead of having a chat?

Thanks Murray, for researching the tare of the subject caravan. As you suggest, the Territory tow car is overloaded, illegal and dangerous even BEFORE anything is added to the tare weight.Spare me! As far as tow capacity of the Territory goes, all 2wd Territory models can tow 2300kg if fitted with the Ford Heavy Duty tow pack, while the AWD models have tow capacity of 2700kg,if fitted with that Heavy Duty towpack. However, the lightweight rear axle makes it impossible to ever reach that figure.Cheers

Bit of spare time today, have we,Tony? I ask that you actually READ the post I made today at 7.41am,and you then will/should understand (?) where I determined that the "stuff" loaded into the van AND the car was indeed heavy. The R-Send of the car dragging on the ground also suggests that one or both of these vehicles is loaded with heavy "stuff"? Hope this helps you to understand these "simple facts".Cheers

Thanks,Tony, for supplying these figures for your car and van.Always good to see a good result from careful planning, but comparing your setup with that of the subject vehicle is an exercise in stupidity. I cannot even imagine where you'd fit five children, let alone the beer fridge, although you may well have a generator that we can't see, hanging off the back of your van? Likely you can safely travel after dark, whereas the subject vehicle's headlights would be pointed skyward, and would be of no use. No matter how much some may waffle on,and defend the indefensible, the simple facts are (there you go,just for you)  that the car and van are overloaded, unsafe, uninsured and an accident looking for a place to happen. Death trap. The Territory is limited to an 80km/hr speed limit when towing, but with that weight, and only 140kw,I doubt that that car would ever reach that speed on a flat road? Cheers

Actually Yobarr, I rarely read your replies. But on this occasion you apparently havent read mine where I said in terms of the overweight issue- "AND APPEARS SO" appears means I'm not into hanging a family on a picture even if it is obviously overweight. Yes, there is the safety factor but again there is a mouth we all have and a voice that can be used. It was mentioned that with 7 on board where do you put all the heavy stuff? Too many topics here not supported as facts. So what is a fact?  Well thousands of years ago there was a giant sea turtle 4 metres long that swam on the oceam floor and to survive it ate other sea creatures....and thats a fact... :)

To digress a little. Followers of the many postings by Eaglemax Tony may have been intrigued by his choice of tug.

The JBA Falcon is a 'kit' car imported from England and assembled by the owner. Engines are chosen by the builder, in Tony's case a Holden 3.8 litre, but could be anything available that fits. The name of the company making the kits, JBA, are the first initials of the three founders.

If anyone wants one like it I believe that there is a white one for sale in Perth at this time. Or you can arrange to have one imported from England and DIY.

Now, back to the 'discussions' about weight!

To build/restore a car is a great hobby , it lets you interact with a lot of people (...nowadays ,via  Internet , from all over the world...) , prevents you from becoming dependent on entertainment to fill in time (BIG PLUS )  and so keeps your mind (and body..) active  and gives you heaps of satisfaction and also something useful when completed.   KB

I just read this thread, I owned a Ford Territory Ghia and they can come with 7 seats and they are rated to 2300kg towing capacity.

While some in the thread are thinking of the persons economic circumstances that sentiment is admirable but  the overriding issue is the safety and welfare of the children

and danger to other road users if the vehicles driver looses control if it is overloaded.

Depending on the experience of the person witnessing the caravan and its possible weight issues they should report the matter to the

relevant authorities such as the police or RMS inspectors to allow them to asses the car, van and any overloading issues.

The number of children riding in the vehicle their safety and welfare are the overriding priority !

The generator would be closely looked at as well.
