A letter to the ABC - From Veteran Support Force.

Over a year ago, on 20 October 2020, the ABC published an article based on the account of a US Marine who alleged that November Platoon of the 2nd Commando Regiment had executed a prisoner in Afghanistan in mid-2012.

In this story, the ABC stated that, A United States Marine Corps (USMC) helicopter crew chief says Australian special forces shot and killed a bound Afghan prisoner after being told he would not fit on the US aircraft coming to pick them up.

This story was based on the unsubstantiated claims of one US Marine whose account cannot form the basis for the assertions made by the ABC. In the following 12 months there has been no follow up or correction to the published story.

November Platoon is calling for:

  1. A request a written apology from the ABC and the reporters to the men and families of November Platoon.
  2. A call for an independent review of the ABC story published on October 20, 2020.
  3. A call for the ABC to publish a full correction to this story including an unqualified, genuine apology to the members of November Platoon.

The ABC reported the account of a credible eyewitness. The ABC doesn't need to apologise to anyone.

"In the following 12 months there has been no follow up or correction to the published story." Why is that? Is it because the allegation was not investigated?

Possum3, you do yourself and your country a disservice by being an apologist for the wrongs committed by the police and armed forces. I have the greatest respect for anyone who puts their life at risk in the service of his country, and I feel unworthy to judge their actions in the heat of battle, but an unlawful killing must not be ignored. I have a friend whose civilian sister was taken hostage and murdered in WW2. I know just how much these atrocities affect the families of the victims.

No apology required. I saw these sort of things (political killings) in a very large company I worked for. A lot of workers were fired for the faults of management & then they got a promotion. Management needs to fixing & board of directors need replacing.

I clearly recall hearing this story on ABC radio news: I believe I am correct in saying that the BBC would not have published such a story without verification.

May I suggest that those in agreement with damning a Regiment/Force/Person on an unsubstantiated/alleged report (of heresay from a US Marine) - read the statement from November Force Members that were on the Operation when/where this "äccount" is alleged to have occurred.

My main sticking point is the "Trial by Media" by desk jockey's - It is grossly unjust and unfair, particularly in our Country that has a tried and proven Legal System, that any person is condemned and publicly named prior to any Legal Proceedings being heard.

I an offended by your response.

The ABC reported the account of NOT a credible non eyewitness, and yes it does need to apologise.

If you read the entire letter sent to the ABC the reporters in question, should have varified the eyewitnesses account to confirm it varisity. But no true to form the ABC was after another headline scalp and Australias military is an easy target which cannot defend itself.

"In the following 12 months there has been no follow up or correction to the published story." Why is that? Is it because the allegation was not investigated? Because if an apology or follow up investigation have been carried out by the ABC, it may have discovered that that had slandered those accused.

Why is the ABC and the rest of the media hold Australians to a higher account that the rest of the world ?

It well beyond time that the ABC stands on its own two feet and is not funded by the government.

I give my share to the ABC. I can't name one commercial entity that produces anything worthwhile.

The ABC (radio anyway - I don't watch TV) is nowadays a Green Left staff collective with a social change agenda.

Its hourly news bulletins lead and are filled with social issues:

Aboriginal issues

Domestic violence funding

Climate change

etc

"Civil war in Syria... is Syria near Brunswick St Justin, I did Women's Studies not geography at uni?"

I have been a *big* supporter of public radio since I was about three years old but the ABC is out of control and needs either a *radical* reform or to be, very sadly, sold off.

I dont know about that Mike. When you testify you are then exposed to cross examination. It certainly puts the brakes on quite a few people who claim they have been unfairly criticised.

I saw what happened to people during Robodebt Mike. It led to suicides. I saw what happened to the whistleblower who spoke about the bugging of the East Timorese. I saw the refusal to name the source of one million dollars as a gift. Does that answer your question.

Totally agree. It baffles me that more people don't recognise that they are being continually indocrated into the ABC's left wing agendas. As we pay for them, they should represent us all. Where is the focus on actual news the way it used to be?

The ABC does represent us all. It's just that the ABC's vocal antagonists have a perception of reality that is skewed by the right wing media. "Us" includes LGBTI, Muslim, black, and every other minority group. The conservative media rarely touches on these subjects in an objective way, so when the ABC gives these people their pro rata share of the ABC's programming, it's natural to see this as unrepresentative. I'll be honest -- many of these subjects make me very uncomfortable to the point that I have to switch off. However, I see that as my problem, not theirs.

ALL journalists report alleged crimes. I don't see any difference in this case.

It would seem that some people are responding to this post just to bash the media outlet that he or she hates. You sound like that shock jock Allan Jones.

Yes "really"..........

In Darwin (which is familiar for me)....

Clare Martin ....7.30 presenter (in Darwin)......leaves ABC.....becomes ALP chief minister

Barbara McCarthy......7PM news reader (in Darwin)......leaves ABC.....ALP member of NT Assembly ....now ALP senator for NT

Kristy O'Brien.......currently Landline.........real name "Mrs Michael Gunner"

There are a couple others but their background is a bit shady even for a forum.

Nationally there are .......Barrie Cassidy ......Juanita Philips ......Fran Kelly.......Wendy Harmer .........and on and on you can go.......

My point is this .......can anyone name someone with an association with the ABC ......and has left the ABC and gone into the conservative side of politics ?

cheers Bilbo

I am reminded of the excellent cartoon posted by anolphart back in August.

ABC News Training

In that thread the subject of ABC's success with Walkley Awards came up. I made a challenge for anyone to find an award that was negative to the left or positive to the right. Any takers?

It works the other way too. Alan Jones was Malcolm Frasers speech writer and is now on Sky. Peter Costello was federal treasurer and now the boss of Channel Nine. From memory, Barbara McCarthy was the newsreader on Imparja when I lived in Darwin. The people you nominate were voted into Parliament. Jones and Costello were given jobs after political careers.

No Mike, not at all. The ABC board did not place them into parliament, the public voted for them. I recall when Maxine McKew ousted Little Johnny from his blue ribbon seat. She was an ABC journo, a lefty too and the electorate preferred her. The ones that have progressed into politics have performed well. The handwringing duds dont go into politics, they just stay employed at Their ABC as no one else would hire them.

Dmaxer, you miss the point of this discussion when you focus on how these journalists turned politicians got there.

The fact that these high profile journalists moved into high profile left wing politics highlights the history of bias by ABC. Their human nature would have ensured that the reporting they did would not be flavoured towards the right wing. It would go against their grain to do so especially if it conflicted with the traditional leftist view of the subject.

No doubt you have a left perspective and there is nothing wrong with that. But could you write a post on here that praised the right side of politics? No doubt quite difficult. The same goes for those journalists who would then have to face their new political supporters.

Earlier comments pointed out the right wing bias of commercial news. The difference is that commercial news does not have an obligation to be impartial. ABC does, and falls miserably short. They represent the views of left Australia, and are far from impartial. To see that you only need to count the articles about minority groups to see that they are over-represented and are not the views of mainstream Australia.

The difference is...a 'Private Company' (funded by themselves) V 'Public Entity' (funded by us).
You conveniently forgot to mention that the UNIONS have a free ticket into the Labor Party?

Your references have a major difference, one lives or dies on popularity and their OWN money, the other never rates and never has too, it is funded by US!

I agree with you. I find the majority of the people employed by Their ABC completely biased and non representative of mainstream Australia. Just watch most programs and there is their agenda on full display. The people I nominated were the exception. Having said that, the FTA channels and Sky all have their agenda. There is no middle ground.
