Awning repairs

Bloke next door to me is mute and has had his awning damaged. They are heading towards Townsville. Any recommendations in that area? Thank you Bas

Years ago, I bought a replacement awning (including the roller) from a guy on EBay. His name was Bruce Eddie tel 0416736420. The original awning was white with blue colour trimmings, but the replacement I got was blue with white trimmings. It is a hell of a lot hotter to sit under than the original, so if you are buying sight unseen, specify exactly what you want. Apart from this downer, the price and delivery was excellent.

Hi Bas,
Look up Allshade Canvas & Vinyl, phone number 0432 058 364, address is 10B Carroll St, Mt Louisa. You have to follow Carroll St around the cull desac to nearly the end.

David replaced my rather worn out awning (could have been the original - 10 years old). He used a 4 layer vinyl. He gets recommendations from Jayco Townsville.
He showed me how to repair my poptop section & gave me material to do it.

Don't get a Dometic replacement the vinyl is definitely second grade out of China - I had three de-laminate under 2 year - as they keep on replacing under warranty I'll keep it up until they decide to replace it with quality product.

Any recommends for just the fabric?

Mine has seen better days so I should put that task a bit higher in the queue. I have a sewing machine that could easily do the job. But with my sewing speed it would have to be a decent cost saving or a lot better quality to bother with making it compared to an ebay special already made.

Erad, a good tip about choice of colour. From what I see, most are designed on appearance alone and do not take that into account.

I reckon a light grade of canvad is the go. Similar to what swags and outside blinds are made of.

he most talked about one for quality is the Aussie Traveller replacement vinyl roof.  It will cost more than the others but it is by far the best quality.

Thanks for the tip Peter. Is it really different in quality? The pattern seems to be the same progressive stripes pattern as virtually all the other sellers.

My idea was just to buy the fabric and sew it myself. Maybe there would be different patterns and colours available. But I can't find fabric wide enough, and the effort is probably not worth it anyway. Still have not abandoned that idea though.

Just a question on this subject -
Do covers for awning vinyl work satisfactory when it is rolled up? I note some have to be removed when the van is in motion while others can be left on.

As I mentioned above, the vinyl that was added to my awning is top quality 4 layer - the original lasted well but I'm certain it was only 2 layer with some sort of reinforcement between the layers. I did approach Aussie Traveller, measured it (twice) but they said they don't make one of that size - the reason I went to a local manufacturer.

Just because the others supply much the same looking colours, do not assume they are all the same material.

Go back to my link. Below the main picture you will see five icons that will produce different views in that frame. Click on the RH one and see the construction of the fabric. Some of the others will have fewer layers or even only one layer. Compare the ATRV material with what you get from the others.
