WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR JAN 26?
BOULIA
A virtual ceremony will be live-streamed and later uploaded to the council website for those who wish to watch later. When the current wave passes the Boulia Shire Council hope to have a 'get over COVID' event.
BURKE
The shire will not be holding any Australia Day events this year.
CARPENTARIA
An awards ceremony and BBQ breakfast will be held at the Civic Centre for those who are double vaccinated, with attendees required to wear a mask. A range of activities will be held by community groups in the afternoon, including a damper and pie eating competition in Karumba, golf in Normanton and free swimming at both town pools these activities are open to the entire community.
CLONCURRY
The Citizenship and Awards ceremony will be held at 9 am at the Cloncurry Community Precinct, with a free BBQ brunch to follow. After lunch, a community super 8 cricket competition, will run from 1-7 pm at the Cloncurry Recreation grounds with free BBQ along with drinks and bar available.
DOOMADGEE
The shire will not be holding any Australia Day events this year.
FLINDERS
The Awards Ceremony will be live-streamed from 9 am. Refer to the council Facebook page for further information. The council is encouraging the community to enjoy the Hughenden Recreational Lake throughout the day with a BBQ to be held at 6:30 pm followed by an 8 pm fireworks display.
MCKINLAY
Julia Creek Civic Centre will host the awards ceremony from 10:30 am, with ambassador Tim Fairfax of the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation flying in from Brisbane to present awards. After the ceremony, there will be a community BBQ lunch.
MORNINGTON
For the first time in 40 years, Mornington Shire will have formal events to celebrate the day. While there is no awards ceremony, there will be plenty else to do. In the afternoon, locals can look forward to a HUGE sausage sizzle, with Mayor Kyle Yanner facilitating traditional activities such as spear throwing and boomerang throwing. The tavern will also open for a few hours in the afternoon.
MOUNT ISA
Council has made the decision to postpone their Great Australian Bites event. The Citizenship Ceremony will be broadcast live on Facebook from 10 am. Splashez Aquatic Centre will be open from 10:30 am through to 5:30 pm with free entry. There will also be free entry to the Outback @ Isa Riversleigh Fossil Exhibit from 8:30 am for those who are double vaccinated.
RICHMOND
Free community breakfast will be held at 7:30 am followed by the Awards Ceremony. Dress in theme for activities including a jumping castle, hole chook run as well as a slip and slide. All events will be held at the golf club on Hillier Street.
