I am now thinking we should end dual citizenship.

With the world in turmoil Ukraine and Taiwan war threats etc., I am now beginning to think the boundaries should be defined, i.e. no dual citizenship, you are either Aussie or your not. Now i have the right to dual citizenship, and so I will have to denounce my home country, but my wife and children are all Aussies.

And the sooner that happens, the better. You're either "All in" or you're "Out".Having a bet each way is not being "fair dinkum".Cheers

I have an English passport, actually the Australian one is a rip-off, it cost me more even though I was born here. UK passport was forward dated for expiry and Australian one was back dated. Australians get the rough end of the pineapple! Anyway, other half is German. Our two families were fighting each other for centuries, we're moved on. It's far better people can have easy interaction. Better than having a moat and filling it with sharks.

We're all British subjects, so that should be OK.

The UK government tried an election stunt. It back fired. Now I have to leave "Europe" as such to Switzerland every 6 months to swap passports.

Boy I "hate" skiiing since the age of 7 (actually was driven to Mt Kosciuszko summit at 6 months of age, you could do it in those days), so back to southern France in summer.

There are simple EU work arounds.

I always travel on my Aussie passport, but I take my UK one with me, because it's a 'security blanket' if something untoward happens I have 2 embassies I could potentially go to. But I'm still true blue and have been since my feet stepped of the plane in 1976

Never ceases to amaze me how some people who chose to make Australia their new homes, presumably
for a better future, still hold strong allegiance to where they came from.
I am the son of an immigrant. I have an interest in where I was born and came from but
should there be a serious conflict, my allegiance is for the country who looked after us
all these years when we stepped off the boat in 1970.
BTW we were sent to Villawood. Not a detention centre then.

Consider the case of Eileen Gu who was born and raised in America, but competed for China at the recent winter Olympics. Who knows what drove her to do this, but I suspect it may have had a lot to do with Trumpism and the anti-Asian sentiment that was fostered under his rule. Can you be expected to be loyal to a country whose people treat you like dirt?

Maybe she was only treated like dirt during the Trump era which is only a small timeframe.

Hope she goes back to China NOT USA. Got her priorities wrong. She obviously did not appreciate the freedom in USA.

The bigots and racists didn't just magically appear during the Trump era. They have always been here. Trump merely brought them to the surface and made them feel good about themselves.

That said, Gu's US compatriot, Zhu Yi, who also competed for China, fell during her competition and was ruthlessly criticised by the Chinese public. Would the American public have treated her the same way? I don't know, but Trump bashed the US women's soccer team for their failures on the field.

If you read the interviews with Gu, she's doesn't feel any conflict. It's the media that keep on stirring the pot asking why when USA and China are at conflict? It's the politicians why are at conflict not the majority of people, unless the person is a racists or nationalist.

The majority of people see other people as people. Then there are those who see race, religion, nationality, etcetera, before they see the person.

I have been thinking about this concept for a few days and I say to you that whilst Australia is prepared to bar its citizens from returning to their home country for two years then you have no right whatsoever to require single citizenship status of Australian nationals.

It was basically along those lines why I decided to take up my option of a British passport a decade ago. My trust in Australian governments went downhill, not that it was good to start with.

I am one of the few very lucky people who have more options when things go pear shaped & I never forget it.

It was wrong on every level that Australians could not return home.

I have noticed over the years that other countries do more for their citizens, where as Australia let's their citizens rot.

Yes, I have observed the same.

I have the right to three passports and were I in trouble in some strange faraway land, as I have been, it would not be the Australian consulate upon which I would rely.

I would renew my EU passport if I needed unfettered access to the EU and its associated countries (eg French territories). Also there are certain Asian countries where Australians are on the nose. Travelling on an EU passport would circumvent these problems. I would hazard a guess that most dual citizens would only have a second passport as a matter of convenience.
