2013 Mazda BT 50 EGR failure

Can anyone who has a Mazda BT 50 with a Ford Ranger engine tell me if they have had and EGR failure? If so did it lead to damage to the head gasket/engine requiring a new engine to be fitted?

If it just cracked, did Mazda replace it for you? I have read online it is a well known fault of the BT 50s and 2% of them will fail, does not seem like many but when you look at how many are sold it is a lot of cars that are going to potentially require a new motor at low kms (mine had only done 120,000.

Would appreciate as much info as I can on this failure before I contact Mazda to come to the part on repairs when they have admitted it is an engineering fault. In my investigation into this I also found out that when the mechanic changes the oil they must not walk away and leave it drain completly as with most other cars. May be worth mentioning to any bush mechanics who service your BT 50 on the road, they may not be aware of this.no

There is one particular poster on a couple of the other caravan type forums scaremongering about this and other issues with the Ford ranger / bt50 . Personally on my second bt50 with the 3.2 l motor and had no issues at all . Would I buy again ,absolutely.

Most diesels suffer this issue . Its carbon building up and prevents wastegate working properly ! Its a combination of oil in the crankcase getting into intake mixed with carbon from EGR . This over time sets like concrete . Two things can be done and legal . Fit an oil separator . Yes some charge big time ! Its not hard to make your own
Or buy a nice alloy unit off eBay ! Some just fit a pipe 100mm or so high off crankcase to allow oil to flow back down into engine . The other option to fit water injection . This is what I have done to GM
Diesel as its not intercooled ! It keeps combustion chambers very clean ! Since fitting as long as I have good well charged battery it starts east . 12v system needs all battery it can get !! I add 10-20% ethanol for a little power gain .

The EGR cracked and all the radiator water went out through the exhaust, luckily had an extra alarm fitted which alarmed before any damage was done, but it could potentially have been a new engine at 120,000.

There wouldn't be a mechanic in Australia that's not aware of the 10 minute rule with the oil change on these . I believe that this was rectified around the end of 2015 early 2016 , could be wrong .

Why do you think I gave diesel 4wd's the flick. I may drive trucks occasionally that are diesel, they nary have an issue, but will never buy another diesel 4wd. If I cannot get petrol or electric, then I won't have one at all. My 4wd was up til 180,000 km an ok vehicle, then it became a bomb, $65,000 worth of wasted money. A vehicle should last longer then 180,000km. The caravanners forum, here in Australia, might be the place for you to get recent info about your particular problem, also their is a Ford Ranger facebook page, and it has a lot of stuff about this particular issue.

Its the EPA or pollution steps added to vehicles !! Often takes a few years to work out durability. Look at petrol engines when unleaded came out ! Just became gas guzzlers ! DONT always listen to franchises dealers as they have a EPA thing to obey too . Ill have a diesel
any day . Mind it if I went 4WD I would refresh an older 4.2 Nissan or Toyota . New is NOT ( or late model ) always betta !

In the 40,000 kms (nearly two years) I have done since fitting an expensive catch can to my D-Max, I've collected just over a litre of oil that would have gone into the EGR system & turbo. I considered the cost of the can to be good insurance.

My GU Patrol came with a cheaper can - it caught some oil but still let some go through as seen on the air/turbo pipes.

I saw friends who had a Pajero spend oodles of cash on their engine all because they didn't fit a catch can!

Well I am now $3000 poorer including a service by Mazda but at least they are assuring me that I have not damaged the head gasket/engine because I had the overheating alarm set lower than the Mazda alert and stopped immediately. I had to get it towed to Hobart, so thank-god all this happened within a 100kms of a Mazda dealership and not out on the road to Dalhousie Springs last year. Mazda cannot assure me that it will not happen again so I have lost all confidence in the vehicle.

Thanks for the info re this can that can be fitted, could you send a photo?

Look up Western Filters, they have a kit to suit your 4WD. Don't fall for one of the Chinese copy's on e.bay.

hi
main reason i fitted an EGR block / EGR cooler bypass kit as to never suffer a random engine failure . Still being green by not blowing up my engine !!!
