Thermocouple

The Dometic RM 4605 keeps ctutting out when on gas. 240/12 is fine. Fires up ok but flame dies after 30-60 seconds. Have had burner, injector and igniter cleaned to no avail. I am now suspecting the thermocouple may be faulty Fridge had new PCB and eyebrow panel 2 yrs ago. Any ideas?? Thanks for all and any help. Bas

Morning Bas and Eve,

I had a similar problem with my Truma Gas Heater a while back and it turned out to be gas starvation. The gas regulator at the gas bottle outside was not allowing enough gas through. A small adjustment on the regulator and problem solved. The 3 way fridge also solved the hard starting on gas as a bonus. Might be worth checking the gas regulator.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Yes Doug,

I have had a similar thing happen and when I dismantled the regulator the small spring had broken and it appeared to be due to it rusting.

When I went to BOC the guy there said it can happen with the Chinese made regulators as they dont fit springs made of Stainless Steel due to cost.

The moral of my contribution is buy quality if possible, hence my trip to BOC to replace mine.

Wow, yes of course, the regulator!! I will swap out both the thermocouple (purchased) and the regulator. What you all say makes sense now!! Thanks heaps Bas

I'm not saying the suggestions on the regulator being the culprit are wrong, but I have a couple of questions. Wouldn't a failing regulator also show as reduced gas flow at the stove, which can be easily seen? Or a water heater if fitted, as they need a strong gas flow.

To test if the fridge thermocouple is the likely cause, would it work to just keep the start button depressed, as I believe that just bypasses the thermocouple shutoff.

The process of elimination is a certain way to ensure the fault is found. It most certainly may not be the regulator.

The regulator is by far the easier of all the components to substitute.

It could be other faults in tubing and connectors as well. Probably the only appropriate answer with the regard to Bas and Eves safety is for them to seek a gas professional to diagnose and repair the fault.

Holding the start button down though may not be the safest procedure with LPG particularly for the uninitiated.

Hi Bas, sometimes the solution is one you would never think possible.

I have the same fridge as yours and twice had the same/similar problem. Mine would ignite but flame out anywhere between 1-30mins.

Looked at all the usual problem sources and doing the usual cleaning maintenance. Still to no avail!

Stove burners worked ok but oven would flame out after 1-30mins. I know the gas regulator was not the culprit.

It turned out to be the gas bottle or problem gas. Changed the bottle over, on both occasions, and all problems disappeared!

The gas bottles I mostly use are changeover Swap'n'Go.

Another tip, about the gas regulator, if you want to know that it is at correct pressure is to adjust the pressure screw so that the stove burners have no yellow tips, just an even blue flame. Same applies to the oven burner.

Had a problem with the gas heater: it would ignite but flame out after 10secs (built in protection). Cause was incorrect gas pressure. No problem since gas pressure regulator adjusted.

Hope this helps you and others.

One other tip...

If you install gas safety gauges they will lower the gas pressure (slightly) enough to cause problems with the running of some gas appliances. Had experience with this.

 Did you disassemble the regulator?

We only buy gas from BCF, Mitre 10 or Elgas or similar high gas turnover outlets. Well I called the gas guy who went thru it all again, burner, igniter, injector thermocouple etc etc. he said I think you need a thermocouple, but I dont stock that type, with 2 wires, will take 3 weeks to get one!!!! I am sure there was no pressure checks and he did say the burner has a very good flame. I have a new regulator and thermocouple on the way, will be here Monday, express post. Will keep you all posted. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Bas,

Further to my earlier post I would be very interested in the final solution to the problem.

Always good to know how these problems get solved.

I have had a problem caused by the rubber outlet hose between the gas bottle and the appliance which in my case was a BBQ.

It had apparently perished internally and restricted the flow of gas.

I dont think a fridge has a rubber hose so this may not be applicable unless there is a hose somewhere in the supply.

It would be good if we do find out what the problem finally was.
