Just look at what our polies did to the NBN.
Also I am highly suspicious of the Euro centric mob.
Anything not Euro based is inevitably targeted for trading and legal restrictions.
Has been so since the establishment of the EEC/EC.
BTW .. I have simple cheap adaptors that allow me to use the same charger on Android or Apple devices. What's the problem? Just another Euro Political attack on USA Apple IMHO.

Part of this reasoning by the EU is curb the amount of unwanted chargers going to landfill.
Apple is the most belligerent tech company, such a ****ty attitude to sharing how easy would it make if they were to make facetime available to other platforms.
No wonder the British got sick of the EUs constant bureaucratic meddling. I doubt that the Americans will follow suit as it would penalise one of their icon companies in favour of foreign tech manufacturers .. Maybe Apple will just sell a European model and charge them more in order to cover the increased manufacturing cost.. Sounds like a good way to make Apple products less attractive in Europe without putting on tariffs..
I use different charger connectors for apple iphones and Kindle e-books, so I simply use a multi ended adapter. If I was to move to only one connector I would choose the apple lightning connector which can be inserted in either way up, rather than any type of usb a or b or c or micro connector.

Good point. :tick:

That is one of the benefits of USB C. It fits either way. It also supports higher current than the other USB types. The Apple solution is proprietary so not as flexible as USB C, and no doubt they would want their pound of flesh to licence its use, and want to own any future enhancements.
I think it's a great idea to standardise, and soon you would not need a charger to be included. I would like to see it expanded to all low power devices, like modems, smart home hubs, cameras and many more.
As Whenarewethere noted, we need quite a collection of old chargers that have differing connectors.
Next we should be focusing on user replaceable batteries in phones, and then standardisation as well. How good would it be if power tools had interchangeable batteries?
Do you not remember the early days of mobile phones and similar portable devices? Every last damn one of them would have a different charger of different voltage with a different plug! And often the manufacturer would "improve" things by changing the charger/plug between models - I still have my Nokia phone which has a tiny circular plug. And big trouble if you plugged phone A into charger B - the rapid destruction of phone A may result.
iirc it was the EU who mandated USB mini (micro?) as a uniform connector and a damn good move it was too, chargers were then able to become an optional extra when purchasing equipment, my Kindle was not supplied with a charger back in around 2011, it makes the product cheaper and the waste of unnecessary electronic junk is reduced.
I haven't looked in detail at USB C but it seems a decent protocol, reversible connector, some insane data speed and 3A (15W) supply capacity.
As for Apple...? Apple will never be happy until the entire planet is compelled to use only Apple products. If they want to sell in Europe they'll have to toe the line just like the rest of who wish to export there.

I always become concerned when politicians become involved in technological developments.
Reconfiguring the shape and pinout of a connector can hardly be called a "technological development". In fact I have seen hundreds of cases where damage has resulted from the predatory practice of simply switching the pinout of a power cable while maintaining the same connector.
Let's hope that the EU becomes the bulwark against the ruthless, rapacious kind of capitalism that is prevalent in the USA. The fact that a few American states have only just recently introduced right to repair legislation should tell us all that we need to know about corporate greed.
The newest "innovative" technological development is modular power supplies in desktop computers. If you're one of the many people who like to assemble or repair their own computers, you now need to be aware that modular PSUs are supplied with cables that no longer follow any standardised pinout. In fact, if you swap these cables between your old and new PSUs, you risk destroying your storage devices, even though the actual PSU connectors may be physically identical. The technical forums are full of these disaster stories.
