Perth to Ayres Rock - suggested travel route

Just wondering if someone can recommend a manageable travel itinerary driving with self contained caravan from Perth to Ayres Rock via Eyre Hwy.

Parameters would be:

  • around 500-600 klms per day (a bit more if essential).
  • caravan parks or safe over night stays (i.e. not in the middle of no where).
  • places where water is available for tanks would be useful to know.
  • we are retirees.

Any advice from seasoned travellers would be appreciated.

Cheers.

David

Just an idea.

In 2019 we went from Kalgoorlie to Uluru on the Great Central Road (Australia's Longest Shortcut). It is mostly dirt road. Surprisingly good except the short bit in NT. We did see a number of caravans. You will have, say 2 nights remote.

We are retired & would do it again.

Thanks.

I have some friends who have done that route a couple of times and I was very envious.

I have  a petrol Y62 Patrol  so would be concerned about fuel availability due to reduced range.

Cheers.

Fuel is available at intervals of no more than 300km on Great Central Road but the petrol is a low aromatic brew called Opal, designed by BP to prevent kids sniffing it to get high.I'm sure that the Y62, while certainly loving fuel, could travel well over 300km on a tankful since the tank has, I think, 150 litres capacity? Go for it! Cheers

We are petrol as well. We use 98 where we can for longer range, if it is outrageously expensive we use 95 or 91, but otherwise it works out the same per km. All the locals out there drive 2 wheel drive cars.

Pick up an Australia's Longest Shortcut flyer from a tourist information centre. When you get to Lenora register online for the basic travel permit, doesn't cost anything. One for WA & one for NT. Jot the permit numbers down. It doesn't take long to travel, camp well away from the towns. In town only for filling up, stay with your vehicle & lock up any fuel containers. Other than that we enjoyed the drive.

Let the tyres down, drive slowly & use TPMS for peace of mind. Obviously a compressor & tyre repair kit to give you options!

You come out at Uluru inside the National Park, so if you get there early enough you will have time to walk around one of the pebbles for free.

If your going via the Eyre Hwy as you have stated, fuel and camping won't be a problem, there are towns and roadhouses all along that route to Pt Augusta where you will turn left and head north. Again that route has Roadhouses all the way, just get a good map.
As far as camping , dozens of designated free camp spots where you won't be alone, some caravan parks and a lot of roadhouses also provide good safe camping as well.
A good map, get the wikicamps app or the Camps 11(I think thts the latest) book.
Thousands do it each year, both ways, no real issues, bitumen all the way.
500-600 kms per day, retired, no time restraints(there big/long days towing), slow down enjoy the scenery and maybe plan for 400+ a daywink
cheers
Ian
