ice build up

Is it normal for a 12 v RV compressor fridge / freezer to form ice on the plate attached to inside ceiling of fridge compartment , fridge is 6 years old , have cleaned seals and seems to be sealing ok , just ice builds up quite quickly , and not opened or often  or loaded with much food .

thanx in advance .

Hi Barry.Whilst I know nothing of the operations of fridges I can advise that my 12v RV compressor fridge/freezer, which is a similar age to yours, never has any ice on the subject plate. There is much knowledge on this forum, so I'm sure that you'll get good advice. Good luck.Cheers

Ice usually means humidity from an external air leak. Or, if the fridge doesnt have an automatic defrost cycle.

Put a bright light inside your fridge & look very closely to see if you can detect *any* light around the seal . Double check with a cigarette paper between seal & fridge body to see if you have any 'loose' spots.

If you don't have auto defrost ice will build up & probably shouldn't need defrosting more than monthly at most, maybe longer. If it's more often then you most likely have an air leak.

As pointed out, humidity.

Our 28L fridge we usually run it at 5°C, still gets a film of ice but melts off, but before we had auxiliary batteries in the car I use to run it at -22°C while driving to cool down thermal mass (thin ice packs) around the edge & would get quite a bit of ice forming, more so at the coast.

Our home bar fridge frosts up very quickly, but we are in a humid environment.

A tip to assist when defrosting, before turning your fridge /freezer on, wipe over any area that is likely to accumulate frost with food grade silicone, the next time you need to defrost the ice will slip off in sheets when the walls start to warm. Redo after each defrost.

It is better to have the fridge loaded so there is a lot of thermal mass. This also helps stabilising temperature. So when you defrost, the evaporator will warm up far quicker than the contents.

If you have a well stocked fridge with a fair bit of mass, turn it off at night & back on it the morning & the ice will have melted but the contents will still be plenty cold enough.

This is a an experiment I finished on Sunday, 3 days ago, running the temperature down to -2°C & the fridge is still cold, 4°C at the bottom of 10.5kg of ice blocks & 7.9°C at the top. I have just left the fridge to see how long it takes to warm up.
