I'm currently camped 10m from the water of a beautiful lake which is, indirectly, fed by the Loddon River (Victoria). Given the amount of rain we have had recently I have been watching the lake for water rise like a hawk!

However the BOMs local river height measurements do have me a little worried:

80m river rise!

But, it appears, the river level fell very quickly too so I can stop building the ark and chasing up two of all animals (Question: how does one sex wombats? Not much point in having a pair of gay male wombats).

I informed the BOM about two weeks past of the issue but they don't seem to have sorted it yet... I have much respect for the BOM but government employees do seem to move rather slowly :)

We're currently camped by ourselves somewhere in Loddon Shire.
With the current weather, now is not the time to be camped anywhere near a lake or river.
We're getting our water from a pristine mountain spring in granite country. smilesmile

In the Loddon Shire it must be a very small mountain... six feet or so perhaps?

The lake is controlled and has actually dropped an inch or two so I suspect my socks will dry soon enough but I'll keep an eye on things in any event.

There was news about rains in Victoria. Not sure how that rain affects your location.

You seem to have an addiction to boggy, grey clay, redgum forest areas beside rivers, creeks & lakes.
Doesn't being in the same kind of habitat get monotonous sometimes?
There are plenty of out of the way spots to camp in solitude with a plentiful drinkable water supply away from redgum forest.
The one we're at currently has water from a spring like Mt Franklin bottled water.
We've been here for five days & haven't seen a soul, staying another two weeks.

Thanks for that. We've had quite a bit of rain in NW Vic and the forecast if for up to another 30mm over Tues/Wed, the Murray River is now in "moderate flood" through much of Vic.

 NW of Mildura on the Murray near Wentworth in all redgum habitat.

Anywhere near the Loddon River that is near water is Redgum habitat.

The problem with much of the spring water through central vic is the areas history of mining and the use of cyanide for a good period of time to separate the gold from the low grades of ore. This then leaches into the soils and hence the water tables. Eg. cyanide tanks are still well in evidence in several location through central vic.

The was not really much environmental concerns through the mid to late 1800 and even into the early 1900s.

Reading this thread I have to ask myself what kind of idiot would camp anywhere near the Loddon River while it's in flood? For that matter why would anyone camp along the Murray River in Winter during a record rainfall year? Someone with a very low intelligence level. The SES are sick of people putting themselves at risk. We're expecting our third La Nina year in a row, stay away from riverine, low lying areas is my advice.

All good so far thank you, indeed the lake has dropped an inch or so although we have 20mm+ of rain forecast tomorrow and another 10mm+ next week but the lake is a controlled environment so we'll see how it goes, as you may imagine I watch its level closely. I note that a few people who have been visiting each summer for the past 200 (or something?) years are here so I guess they have good confidence.
