I'd say this is an edible mushroom

Would you say it's an edible mushroom?

As a boy I use to collect field mushrooms but I'm very wary and unsure of them these days. It seems the 37mm of rain we have had over the past two days has encouraged them poke their heads up.

No, I wouldn't.  Never ever eat wild mushrooms unless you are a mushroom expert.  Get them from the greengrocer.

A good test for edibility however is the taste test, if a tiny amount is placed on the tongue and chewed a burn like chilli means the mushroom is poisonous, a pleasant mushroomy taste means it is edible and an unpleasant taste means you wouldn't want to eat the mushroom anyway.29 Apr 2014

I'm now almost sure it's a yellow staining mushroom which is poisonous.

The photographs hardly show the small yellow areas (or maybe they weren't there then) but it has certainly gone more yellow in the two hours since I picked it and doing the cut stem test the link mentions is pretty conclusive.

Oh well... tinned mushrooms in my omelette tonight then :(

Your sig seems spot on.... :D

Tinned mushrooms aren't very nice.  Next time you go to the shops get some dried ones to have later on.

I too as a lad used to pick field mushrooms.

One job that I had involved me driving out thru the countryside early in the mornings.  I would often see masses of mushrooms in the roadside paddocks.  I would gather a few dozen & drive back home to my elderly Mother in time to present them to her for a late breakfast.   I was always the favourite son! LOL

Late day at work those days, but nobody cared.

Not game to eat them these days.

I think that the advice re dried mushrooms is spot on.  I always carry a jar of several sorts in the van.  The Chinese shops that abound around my home are a good source if you are game to eat Chinese food.

The ones pictured do have the nice pinkish underside (a bit dark though) and I would be concerned about the brown/black markings on the top.  Usually, clean pure white on top & soft pink under.

Image titled Identify Edible Mushrooms Step 3

Look for mushrooms without scales on the cap. Avoid mushrooms with patches or scaling of a lighter or darker shade on the cap,
which may appear like spots. These scaly spots are common among poisonous mushroom varieties.[3]

Looks poisonous to me....

There are several very poisonous mushrooms that apparently taste good... determing if a mushroom is poisonous by tasting is very very unreliable and may end up with you dead.

Rub the top - if patches turn yellow it is definitely one of the nasty ones!

Mike,
You ask a question, people respond with due caution, and you decide to cut them down and call them wimps!
Mate, you (as usual) are out of line!

What a strange, or perhaps vindictive, post.

As Dorian pointed out; I was joking and indeed the joke was self depreciating, ie. I was the butt of my own humour, this is what I wrote;

----

Oh you're a bunch of wimps - a few mushrooms never hurt anyone... eeerrrr... no... hang on a mo' :)

----

Let me explain:

Initially I spoke confidently of how others were wrong and mushrooms were harmless.

Then I became less sure as I internally considered my strong statement.

Next I began to express doubt about the original statement.

Finally I began to withdraw the original certainty that mushrooms were harmless leaving me looking foolish.

This process is called satire and is commonly used in sophisticated humour.

Vince56: I'd appreciate an apology.

Well... given how badly you misunderstood this post it may be you also misunderstood my previous posts about which you now complain?

In any event it matters not.

Go well vince56.

True, it matters not, its only a forum hey, it won't change anything, I thought that "Oh you're a bunch of wimps - a few mushrooms never hurt anyone... eeerrrr... no... hang on a mo' :)" was a condescending response when you were asking the forum's opinion. That was my opinion, I don't think that is "badly misunderstanding" anything at all.

My opinion. Given that, we move on, all the best to you too Mike.
