A few years ago I was lucky enough to discover 'Outsider Art' at Tasmania's MONA gallery in Hobart whilst we were travelling around the state.
The Wall in the Wilderness at Derwent Bridge was enough to bring tears to my eyes but here was something very different but no less powerful.
I'm no 'student' of art, I rarely seek it out but I know what I like when I see it & when it moves me.
I visited MONA attracted by it's headlining controversial offerings (The poo machine ,The wall of Vaginas etc) which mostly I found rather 'Ho Hum' to be honest, but it was the unexpected temporary exhibition by 'The Museum of Everything' which was there at the time which completely blew me away.
No artanywhere had ever had such an impact on me. It was like falling in love for the very first time. It wrapped it's arms around me and said "At last you've found me".It's bizarre passion & realness gave voice to hidden art from the soul of lost souls.
This morning I stumbled across this documentary on Youtube.
If art is not a significant thing in your life, or even if it is, if 'Outsider Art' is something unfamiliar to you then I think you are in for a surprise.
If you are already aware of 'Outsider Art' I hope you will enjoy reacquainting yourself with it in this 1 hour BBC documentary.
I expect it will have it's critics, but for me this is special. I am so pleased it exists.
Have been to Mona 3 times and like you Cuppa it impressed me somewhat. Not an arty person but sure opened my eyes to what is out there and will be going back next time over in Tassie
