I did read only use hydraulic jacking oil.

I did fill our trail mate jack with motor oil as it leaks and still leaking 2 years on.

Probably should buy a new one.

You can get a rebuild kit, be cheaper than a new jack.

Leak is probably due to a faulty "O" ring or Seal......should be an easy fix.

Hydraulic oil is often thinner and manufactured to resist foaming when in use ....important in jacks to prevent a "spongy" effect with the ram and also  keeps a positive feel to the levers "pumping action" (not pumping air). Good idea also to not store a hydraulic jack on its side .

Thank you rgren2, been tossing it about.

1, recon the jack.

2, go to an electric jack.

Or 3 go back to the exercise one, normal wide up jockey wheel.

,

Wide up mode

"Hydraulic oils are expected to have low compressibility, predictable friction and viscosity stability. Engine oils are intended to have high resistance to heat, resistance to absorption of fuels and chemical compounds produced during combustion "

Stolen from Google, there is also another that certain grades of engine oil can be used to get out of gaol. And further references to additives that could cause corrosion etc.

No oil compresses . But some oils airate easy . But in hydro Jack ? Not much chance of that . I made up stabiliser bars on car trailer . Un hook them .. Drive forward .. the trailer lifts off the ground . Then a pin to hold it there . Saves on weight . I carry 10 ton hydro Jack in motorhome . Btw new hydro jacks are not super expensive !!
