Chromecast

Does anyone have experience with using Chromecast on 12v tv when off grid? I would like to use the USB port for power, but my research seems to suggest that I would need a 'power usb' port. I think the tv usb port is 5v and the Chromecast is 5v - but is that enough to power the Chromecast?

We use chromecast and run it through a USB port straight from battery.
Only have as I call it a dumb TV so use Apple phone and Laptop.

USB 2.0 is current limited to 500mA.

USB 3.0 is current limited to 900mA.

USB chargers have higher current limits.

I had a Chromecast and we used to move it between my main home at the time and a holiday home.

What I found was that it would work from the power in one of the TV sets uhb port but it would not work from the TV uhb in the TV at the holiday home.

They were both *dumb TVs* so I assumed that one TV just didnt have the power from one of the ports to power the Chromecast.

A little different to the OP I didnt need it to work without power so I just used the power pack at the holiday home and would plug to the uhb when at our main home,

You might have to splice into a 12 v source in your van and then get a uhb converter to operate it.

Google do have a forum that might yield some more information if you do a search and have a read.

Good luck

I made the mistake of buying a Chromecast with Google TV. It is very fussy about its power source. It won't run from a USB-A connection in my van, but will run from a USB-C connection, which would be USB 3 as I understand it. I bought a merit plug to USB adaptor with both A and C sockets that I can use in the van, and it will run off that using a C2C cable.

I believe that the Chromecast without Google TV is not so fussy, but I also think I read somewhere that it's no longer offered for sale.

p.s.  It was a mistake in multiple senses, as I rarely take the TV when travelling.

If you are simply after screen mirroring, I have a Sony TV & Sony Xperia 10 iii phone & they mirror without any additional gadgets.
