Kick Back Carrier ... As PMG Technicians circa 1958, we had to maintain a system of these that were used between the Front Counter & the Telegraph Room at the back of the local Post Office. (Morse keys & sounders were just being phased out in favor of M15 Teleprinters & Tape Perforators .. We maintained them too) - BTW .. we also had to wind & do minor mtce on the local chiming Town Clock situated in the Post Office spire. The first job of the 2 to 10pm shift on Wednesdays was to climb the stairway up to the top of the spire & wind both the clock & chime mechanisms, after adjusting the time against the Telephone Exchange Clock. We fixed the Post Office Fluro lights too - tubes & ballasts only. In fact we did all the minor Post Office mtce including broken chairs, touch up painting & such like.
The next photo is a cartridge from a Pneumatic carrier system. A local department store used a network of these to send purchase paperwork & cash from the sales counter to the Accounts section where receipts & correct change were made up & sent back to the sales point. No cash held at the sales counter .. only in the Accounts section.
edit .. I was much too young to know much about those suspenders .. but not for the want of trying .. there were about 50 or so un-married Telephonists in the local manual exchanges too.
