It was 1970, I was aged 20 & I was a trainee Design Draftsman. My State Government employer had an annual ball at the St Kilda town hall.
All of my mates had steady girlfriends but I was without one at the time. My mates all bought tickets to the ball & convinced me to buy one too. It was 3 weeks away & I needed to find a partner quickly.
Powerhouse on Albert Park Lake in Melbourne was a well known meeting place for young people for many years. I decided to go by myself & try to meet someone.
The Alan Eaton Big Band were the resident source of music. All the girls stood in a horseshoe shape around the edge of the dance floor waiting to be asked to dance.
I was cruising around when one of my favorite songs '' Watermelon Man'' started. At that moment I saw a girl that looked different with a weird kind of hairdo, so I asked her to dance & she accepted.
We danced to a few songs then went out onto the balcony overlooking the lake with lights reflecting on the water. We talked non-stop & got on like ''a house on fire''.
It was the only time that she'd been to Powerhouse by herself, her girlfriend had pulled out but she thought she'd go anyway. She'd never tried that hairdo before.
I asked her to the ball & she said yes, in the interim I took her out on our first date to see ''The Owl & The Pussycat'' starring Barbara Streisand.
When I picked her up she looked completely different with beautiful long flowing hair. We had a great night together, it was as though we'd known each other for years.
The ball went off fantastically & a month later I asked her to marry me, she accepted & we recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our son, daughter & four grand-kids.

My partner was a blind date. I was in the Air Force at the time and a close friend who was on course with me asked me if I would like to take a chick to the end of course function. At the time I was only interested in having a beer with my mates, skydiving and doing a private pilots license. This was back in 1968. Anyhow a week before the end of course my mate's wife was admitted to hospital in Wagga as she was pregnant and had come in contact with German Measles. My mate asked me if I would like to go and visit his wife, pick up a new helmet for skydiving and come back and have a beer. That sounded like a great plan. Unbeknown to me they had invited my future partner to the hospital that night. I was introduced to her and was smitten. We are still together.
I first met my partner in our lounge room. We had a few friends over one night and she came along with her friend. We started talking, started going out a week later and the rest is 30 years of history.
My first wife I met at work and I was too young and immature. Married her because she had blond hair, blue eyes and big tits. That's he honest truth and assessment.
Marriage lasted about 8 years.
My now partner, I'll make an honest woman out of her yet, I met because her daughter worked for me in my restaurant as a waitperson.
I am more mature, more wise and having played the field substantially after the divorce, it allowed me to understand better
who it was I was looking for.
Strange this came up today, I met my wife on Friday 13th. in May 1960.
Used to meet girls at the movies, living in the Prahan area it was Friday night at the Windsor theater,Saturday at the Astor and "ranch night" at the "bug house" the Empress,on Wednesday.
Met my wife at Louie's Loft in Liverpool NSW. The week before had set up two other dates with different girls over that night, because I was drunk, did not remember doing this, so the next Saturday night, the two girls were in the bar waiting for me. Didn't go down well obviously, so lost both dates. Later in the night, another friend of these girls found me feeling rejected and dejected at a table in the corner, and sat down with me, then she asked me for a dance, and the rest is history. Dated for 6 months, asked her to marry me, and then moved in together, and married after another 18 months. Been together 44 years, have one child, a girl, and 4 grandchildren. Still very much in love with each other.
