Qantas has moved to reassure authorities about engine failure on an Auckland-Sydney flight this afternoon, assuring them that CEO Alan Joyces bonus will be closely inspected and increased as necessary.

I'm perplexed as to why they called "Mayday". My understanding is that that call should only be used if there is an imminent threat to life and given the aircraft is qualified to fly on one engine there wasn't. I would have thought a "Pan" call was more appropriate. Still, they were there and I wasn't.

A mayday is more sensationalistic and newsworthy. After all, maybe some people might interpret 'pan pan pan' as a distress call for someone busting to go to the loo.
Mike unfortunately "News Outlets" dumb down (to their level) regardless of the actual radio call - Pilots/crew are well aware of correct language and I am sure their call would have been "Pan, Pan, Pan".

Before making your own baseless judgment, perhaps you should investigate a little.
A former Qantas pilot says the mayday call issued during a Auckland to Sydney flight was surprising and might impact the aviation industry.
Qantas flight QF144 issued the emergency warning about 2:30pm Sydney time yesterday mid-flight, after one of two engines on the Boeing 737-800 failed.
That alert was later downgraded to a "PAN" (possible assistance needed) and the plane landed safely at Sydney airport, where it was met by dozens of ambulances, police and fire and rescue crews.

I wonder if there is any correlation between the decrease in Australian/increase in overseas aircraft maintenance performed on Qantas aircraft and the increase in maintenance problems/issues?
Cheers,
Roy.

There certainly could be something in that Roy. One of the news services also reported that there is a big push to have just a single pilot steering the plane on some short haul runs. After all they have to save money at any expense. It is a tragedy that the budget cuts may have a serious effect on safety in the air.

Ivan, our flying days are well and truly over but, even if they weren't there is no way you would get this little black duck in a plane with one pilot. Having said that how would anyone know since the the pilot(s) are already on the flight deck sitting behind a terrorist defying door, before anyone boards.
Any cut backs that involve safety are surely not acceptable?? Of course we do not know the full story, maybe we never will unless someone in the know breaks ranks.

Now up to 5 return to base within a week. Must be a super bonus coming for the leprechaun
Does anyone notice that we never see him on a news conference when cuts to Qantas are the direct cause of flight disruptions.
For example he sacked 10,000 ground crew when Covid raised its head but as soon as our Scotty got him up in the air again he was constantly on the news media telling us all how the ground staff could not cope.
Would the wages of 10,000 over 6 months come close to his bonus? Apparently not! Now he needs to cut maintenance and pilots.

I have to completely agree with you Phil. The aircraft Qantas use have two pilot seats for a reason.
I will drive, train or bus before I would get on a commercial aircraft with only one pilot.
In Aus I do prefer to drive myself if possible.
