Hi all, Murray here.

Hi folks,

Just getting in to the community side of things, so hopefully I will get to know you folks.

Ummm, based in Frankston. Did the Nullabor 20 times(10 returns) in seven years in the late '80's whilst living in Perth in/on various vehicles. From Mildura originally, lived in Perth, Penrith, Alice Springs and 3-4 suburbs in Melbourne, so, apart from Tassie(and you will NEVER get me on that boat), I feel I've pretty well covered the bulk of Southern Australia..

Building a slide-on for my AUIII Falcon 1-tonner in my shed atm for solo touring from around Coffs to Broome over a couple of years. Currently evaluating various solar, mobile internet, fridge, cooling, heating etc setups before I decide on my final build. No hard time frame, just preparing for the landlord's next move.

Love a chat, so, if you're inclined, please say hello.

Cheers

Murray.

Welcome to the Forum Murray,
I would expect that your Ford is the 5 litre, otherwise restoring a 20+ year old vehicle would not be a viable option to make into a unit suitable for a slide-on.
Wish you well in your endeavors and traveling future.

Thanks Possum,

Nice to find some likeminded folk to chat with.

Nah, the old AU is the 4.0 Intech. However, its a genuine 1-tonner, so, heavy duty suspension, commercial drive-train ratios and a load capacity of 1275kgs off the showroom floor. Light truck tyres by law, 82 litres of 91 fuel @ 13km/ltr.

I have zero desire to go 'off-road', done enough of that, and have the tools and skills to pretty well rebuild it on the side of the road if I have to. Combine this the fact that I can find 3-4 donor cars at just about any wrecker's in Australia, not to mention Ford still stocking most of the important bits, and I'm pretty happy to use it as a base vehicle.

I'm currently sorting the 'wheat from the chaff', so to speak, regarding my slide-on build. I have my solar/genset power sorted to be off-grid permanently if desired, hot/cold running water, 5G internet, 12/18V Milwaulkee charging station and 18/36V Ryobi charging(combined, over 300 tool skin's available at any Bunnings or Repco Oz wide). Onboard 40ltr compressor, 200mm post hole digger, MIG/TIG welder, and a couple of other gizmos.

I'm planning to document in photos and text the build from day to open road and thought I might share the info. on TGN forum.

Anyway, again, thanks for the welcome.

Cheers
Murray.

 Cheers Blues Man,

Yup, top-notch actually.

How long they'll stay that way, who knows.

But hey, there's always a small houseboat as an option...

As long as i don't end-up calling the steps of Flinder's Street Station 'home', I'll be happy.

Cheers

Murray

A warm welcome from me also, MuzzMelbourne

As you are building your own slideon, I will point out that at the free camps I stay at

More and more are signpost that only self contained vehicles, (no water on ground etc) can stop there

It may pay to build a grey water tank

Hope that there are many happy road trips ahead of you

Hi again Murray, There is no requirement for Grey Water Tanks to be built in - The requirements for self-containment is a closed receptacle - building in a tank will invariably stuff up your weight distributions, a real problem with slide-ons.

I made my own container with a flexible folding 20litre water container from BCF and a Creepy Crawly hose section, but they are available on line at reasonable prices; www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/portable-wheeled-fresh-water-tank-grey-40l-06941293800738/%231

 Interesting   ..

I was pondering the relevance of this paragraph ..
