Certainly the Palmerston Highway is the easiest , but if you wish to travel to Cairns or similar after your visit to Atherton the Kuranda Range is probably the better of the two obvious options.
However, don't be scared of the Gillies Range. Bit steep and windy, but no big deal.
As we are so often told "Drive to the conditions". Cheers

At the moment and probably for some time there are sections of road works that cause considerable delays. Mainly around Henrietta Creek area.
The Palmerston suffers badly from many heavy vehicles using it and our annual wet season does the rest. Perhaps consider visiting the Cairns area first and then to Atherton via the Kuranda Range.
Cheers,Ben.
Ben Taxl,
I don't know that I'd like to tow anything up the Kuranda Range, let alone a 28' caravan!
I agree that there are a lot of heavy vehicles that use the Palmerston - we go via South Johnston, cutting off the bottom section through Innisfail.
An alternative would be to go up the back way - via The Lynd & into Mt Garnet, etc.

Hi Warren. While I understand that you have only good intentions with the advice you've offered, the Kuranda Range is a walk in the park, in my opinion. The Gillies is a little more "challenging" but still no big deal.
Been up and down both in my car and van, with GCM (Total weight) of 6800kg without any problems.
Probably depends on what you're used to, but they're very both easy as far as I'm concerned, and we don't want to deter Ben!
