So sad. I have stayed at this camp a number of times on my way across west. Seems a bit senseless. Wonder what the whole story is.
Making travelling more and more difficult. Caravan Park was mentioned. Think its only town between Three Ways (or whatever its called these days) and Mt Isa. Barkly Homestead is there somewhere (with a paid CP)
Disrespective behaviour towards and in culturally significant lands, led to the closure of access to Wollumbin (Mt Warning), so this closure at Camooweal is not without precedent. A Colleague at my Uni is an elder from a remote community near Birdsville and often surprises me with his ability to see both sides of things. Apparently, a lot of the indigenous community sees the No campaign against the proposed Voice to Parliament as another example of disrespect for First Nations people. As an Elder, my friend has already had to contend with community kids acting out this perceived disrespect by throwing rocks at cars travelling through remote communities.

The last time I travelled the Barkly the was no homestead, 1st servo was at Barry's Caves in 1980 fuel was $1.00 a Litre next stop was Frewena, then on to Three Ways.
Whats making it more difficult, I think there is a roadside stop near the Avon Downs Police Station, and another at Frewena.

Stayed at the free camp a couple of years ago, and loved it. Caravan park was grotty but servo across road did nice meals. Pub was so-so but locals all were friendly and helpful.
Town will die, as will many other centres unless the NO vote succeeds. If camp does re-open you can bet your bottom dollar that it'll no longer be free, and some 'Ranger' will collect fees. And it's just the beginning. NO Cheers
P.S How much money do these people think we should give to them?
I can't be bothered looking up latest fugures, but I do know that in 2015-16 the Federal Govt spent $14.7 BILLION on indigenous people.
To make that figure easier to comprehend it's $14,700,000,000 .
Where does it all end? Give us a break. Cheers

Surprise, surprise. NO from me.

I've camped there many times and it just fits busier.
Last time I saw several caravaners empty their toilet cassette out in the bush instead of driving 2 kms to the dump point.
My bet is that the recent floods washed the 5git into the billabong and its now contaminated.
Often the obvious thing is the reason.
I think you will find it's only a temporary issue.
Interesting how people jump to conclusions about the locals

WARREN MUNDINE was having a discussion with i forget who and the sum of 3.3 billion dollars was mentioned as the figure from the federal budget for aboriginal affairs, the number of aboriginals mentioned was 500,000 (1 half million) if the figures are correct and my maths right, that works out to over $60,000 per individual as Pauline would say, PLEASE EXPLAIN were all the money goes. it the YES vote happens what is going to happen to the state forests, national parks, commonwealth and state lands will they be closed to the general public? i did read that Pauline posted to Hansard (parliamentary record) a wish list that was given to her suggesting such things are on the table
All those using this thread about the closure of a camp site on the basis of cultural disrespect to express their intention to vote 'No' are in my view missing the point. Essentially 'off topic'.
Bottom line is that aboriginal land is aboriginal land & they get to say what is important. If they are good enough to share country with us we should be good enough to respect that & not abuse it. The problem is that too many people continue to abuse it & seek to justify the unjustifiable with anti aboriginal views.
Aboriginal people have rights, hard fought for over decades. Too many people still seem willing to ignore that fact, to persist with views which denies those rights & on every occasion Aboriginal people uphold their rights (particularly over land use/access) out spews the criticism & today with the forthcoming referendum - often in the form of promoting a NO vote.
Accusations of wokeness, & suggestions that the current system gives aboriginal people a voice in parliament are not sustainable no matter how much the right wing media repeats it to those who choose to believe it.
