Ford Ranger slipping auto


I have aPX1 Ranger with a slipping auto transmission. If I park it facing uphill overnight the next morning there is definite slipping of the trans when I put it in gear and drive forward. this morning when I had the caravan attached the trans just slipt and the vehicle wouldn't move at all.

I disconnect the van and drove around the block which solved the problem and the ute would pull the van up the driveway. I have no idea how an auto trans works but it seems circulation oil in the trans helps. Does this indicate low trans oil level or a realy realy expensive problem?

i previously had a BT-50 that i would have to let it idle from a cold start for 2-3 minutes before putting in drive to move vehicle i have in the last 12 month replaced that with a ranger and it does the same thing was told it needed to pump fluid thru the transmission ok if not a cold start both were/are 3.2 6spd. new ranger only has about 10,000 klm on it, so still has a bit of warranty left.

Hi Gus first things first its time to go and see an automission sspecialist.

It could be the case the trans is overdue for a service and adjustment.

When towing your caravan, do you just select drive and off you go and use the cruise control ?

I select drive and when out on the highway use cruise control unless in hilly country. I never drive in sports mode.

Usually caused by a poppet valve sticking inside the transmission preventing fluid flow - As GD explained a Auto transmission service should rectify.

hmm that original problem is often caused by low oil level in older transmissions. Driving them a bit heats up the oil and gets the level up so it will cover the pump inlet to get full oil pressure. Do not continue to move the van with it slipping until it is checked and fixed.
Possibly there are other problems like a stuck poppet valve but the answer is the same, take it to an auto shop before you burn out the clutch plates with the slipping.

 Generally speaking It's not the best thing to do with an auto, towing in drive and using cruise control.

Son has a Raptor and was doing similar.  A mechanic friend looked at it and wouldnt touch it and said take it back to Ford Under warranty.  Everyone was thinking the worst.

A software update solved the issue. smile

 Hmm Tim I would be interested to see a service bulletin about that software update. Any failure to proceed with or without a caravan is a serious fault for a car under warranty and surely would need a factory service bulletin to dealers to alert them of that problem. hmm

Well I sure its not a warranty thing is an issue, considering its a PX1 which is 2011-2015 so its anywhere 8 and 12 years old.

The biggest killer of auto tranmissions is towing big weights in drive, sure you can take off in D but bustin down the highway towing a 2-3 tonne van, 5th gear is 1:1 and thats the towing gear.

Any fool that tells you anything different is FOS.

Hi Jaahn,

I can only go on what I was told by my sons friend who is very hands on and practice whereas my son who is smart in terms of business is totally ignorance when it comes to practical things. Personally I dont think it was an update as such but something happened with it and running a software program fixed it.  Any normal person would have had it looked at right away but not my son.  He drove around for 3 months no.

While I am sceptical about software updates, I did some repairs on a Fiat last year which included a clutch replacement on a automated manual transmission. When test driving it the clutch was so fierce engaging it was painful to start and even change gears. But searching forums for answers it was suggested the solution was to do a relearn with special Fiat software. So I purchased that from OS and put it on my laptop, and did a relearn procedure on the clutch action. No physical work required. biggrin

WOW new car and smooth as a new clutch should be !! Never had to do that before. So I also adjusted a couple of other little electrical problems too including fitting a new bluetooth unit. aww

Brave new world now !! But I still think the OP, Gus's transmission is low on fluid most likely until proved to be otherwise !

I have searched for problems on the newish Ford/Gm 10 speed auto transmission fitted to the Rangers and other vehicles and was horrified to hear the stories. I would not go there for sure. But people love them if they do not stop ! Hmm !

PX1 Ranger 6 speed automatics were known to distort the valve bodies causing the valves to stick. I know as I have a PX1. There are uprated valve bodies available for them along with extended sump pans for an increase in fluid capacity which apparently fixes the issue. So far I have not had an issue but it is a known problem on an otherwise strongly built transmission. They are essentially a Ford copy of the excellent ZF 6 speed fitted to Falcons and Territories. Shame Ford didn't copy the ZF valve body.
