Or as an alternate, Cloncurry, have a look at Karumba, then Croyden, Georgetown, to Mt Garnet etc
Reasonable roads.
Both yours and Possums suggestions are good, but, depending on time available, of the two I would choose yours. There is so much to see and do in those areas, with an abundance of "official" places to free camp, if that is what you like to do, or low- priced van parks. Take your time and enjoy! It is an amazing part of Australia. Cheers
Thanks, from memory the road Mareeba, Kuranda, Cairns is fairly steep, Is it ?? Is the road Atherton, Gordonvale an option ?. I was going to come home the other suggested route via Karumba. Ian
You have to cross over the mountain range somewhere - Mareeba to Cairns as about the best way. The only "low" part of the ranges is Golden Highway through to the New England at Singleton - which would certainly be out of your way.

As Possum says, Mareeba to Cairns down Kuranda Range probably is your best bet. It is a lot easier than the Gillies Range if you are at all hesitant. Gillies is no big deal either, but it is a lot steeper and more winding than the Kuranda Range. Cheers
