Last night I had the absolute pleasure to watch the game with France. One of the best games I have ever seen, and that includes the Premier League and the men's team.

Wife and I lived everyone of those penalties with them. The only thing that would gladden my heart more would be to meet with the Poms and do the same to them. ( did I just say that?) Yep I sure did.

Same here. We are in 100% agreement with what you have written. First game of soccer we've watched in our 35+ years since we left the UK.

Yeah Na

Didn't watch it, coz I cannot see the point of running around for 90 minutes for 0-0 score, what crock to win by a penalty shoot out .

I watched the Rugby League.

Now Albo is ghosting Bob wanting a public holiday I'd Aus makes the final, if his  government hasn't shafted businesses enough already.

The penalty shootout was very suspenseful, probably more than the 120+minutes of play that preceded it, and a thrilling result for the Matildas.  At least there was result.

What about test cricket, days of play then to end in a draw.  Do you watch that stuff?

I certainly do mate. There is a lot going on in test cricket but I guess it doesn't suit everyone like Rugby for instance? VBG.

I have to admit that State of Origin gets me in though! Those guys are fair dinkum. I find myself supporting the Maroons.

It was great to see that there were no play acting to milk penalties, until the last 15 minutes when there was some dodgy dives by a couple of the French girls.

You have to feel sorry for the French. Their striker was almost brought down by a clumsy challenge, and the referee missed a handball in the penalty area. Either incident could have won them the game in normal time.

I never feel sorry for the French Dorian.

I did feel sorry for their goalie who was substituted, she was not a happy little Vegemite.

She was good enough to play ninety percent of the time and deserved better.

I have a little trouble with the goal shoot out process.

Field hockey solved the issue by a change to the rules which resulted in a much 'fairer' approach.  It's not just a single strike at goal but a contest between the keeper & shooter.

BTW they also got rid of the ridiculous 'off side' rule too, to the betterment of the game.

I find field hockey a far more entertaining and perhaps skillful#, but similar, game.

Having said that, I enjoyed watching most of the Matildas game last night.

ps. # perhaps I don't appreciate many of the skills that are employed by soccer players.

Now RL is another story.  Just how good were the Broncos on Friday (except for a couple of the later minutes).  But, as much as I hate to say it, Penrith, with daddy & his little boy, have to be red hot favorites for the GF, barring injuries to that key player.

What a weekend .. Broncos, Matildas (mostly Queenslanders) & Lions all in the winners circle

I find men's soccer to be very boring. Too much back passing, and too much diving. When the women are hit, they just get up and keep going. Soccer is a game where the men play like women, and the women play like men. I'm not surprised that the women's game is attracting so much positive attention.

100% correct. Also applies to Aussie Rules. biggrin  Can't comment on the "Sniff & Push" game as I don't follow it biggrin

"When the women are hit, they just get up and keep going. "

Except the French Girl who copped an eye watering ball to the nose after it cleared our girl trying to head it.

Because soccer doesn't interest me too much I gave your post only  a cursory glance.

However, I must admit that the words highlighted above caught my attention, and caused me to believe that you had inadvertently digressed from discussing soccer players, and were commenting on AFL players? My apologies.

The way that poovta-ball players collapse to the ground, screaming in make-believe pain after a bit of a push, is pathetic.

Play Rugby, a man's game that modern parents won't let their little darlings play for fear they'll get hurt. Cheers

Real Rugby, Ian, but even league is a better game. Like many, I struggle to understand how anybody can think that kicking a ball between a couple of poles stuck in the ground is of merit.

Even more humorous is the fact that if you miss the main target, and the ball goes between two outer poles too bad, but we'll give you a point for getting close! Spare me.

'Real Rugby'?  ... That's sniff & push isn't it ... as different from kick & giggle/aerial ping pong.

The problem with Union is its' plethora of strange rules & strange referee interpretations.

Of course, soccer is a game for cheats & actors ... The men are certainly the worst.

What gets me is that for a game that's all about kicking, they are such terrible shots.

The key to being a star poovta-ball player seems to be having the ability to jump 10 foot up in the air. Nothing else.

And that is called a 'mark' I believe? Spare me. Cheers

I was thinking same, the male soccer players are sooks and the women are tougher, or don't fake it when the opposition have an air swing.
A couple of the French girls did take a dive last night I noticed.
I have been watching the games and have enjoyed the contests.
Particularly the local girls Carpenter and Hunt and Fowler is an extreme talent.
Mind you, I am a sports lover and even drove for 4 hours today to watch a game of bush footy. (R.L. Panthers feeder club v Mudgee).
The culture was very enjoyable today listening to a few of the local ladies swearing at the refs.
Think I learned some new words.
Some of those big gurl units would scare a police horse.......
I just googled Beechworth AFL as I might take in some bush AFL culture in a few weeks time in my travels.
Only saw the extra time onwards last night as the match started too early for my Saturday golf foray.
The womens soccer has been entertaining, can be a bit slow and frustrating but close games in any sport are interesting I think.
My prediction - another draw coming up with the poms 1 - 1 and we will end up playing Sweden for the Bronze and we will win.
I landed a 10 game multi all up today but missed a lucrative 12 game multi with a free bonus bet on it with Australia to draw at $3.40 v France (they judge that result on 90 minutes) and the Western Bulldogs were my only miss by 3 points. Not happy Irene!!!
Womens sport has come along in leaps and bounds and is a good thing, I find some of the games are better to watch because they are not so "regimented" as senior male sports have become. It is nothing new to self tho as played junior cricket with some female state and test players as our rural region was a bush female cricket nursery stronghold and still is.
The success of the Australian ladies, and full credit to them, should produce droves of new budding young soccer players and I reckon that is a great thing for health, character building and outdoor exercise that is so lacking nowadays.
Get 'em off a computer screen and kicking a ball all day like we did as kids.

While I only watched the two periods of extra time and the penalty shootout, I think the girls from both teams showed great skills and certainly well up there compared to the elite level of mens football. Unlike the mediocre talent shown by the AFLW players.

I admit though that I cannot stand all the media over the top, super hype that keeps coming through all the time.

Call me a cynic, but I reckon it's only a matter of time before money changes the way that the woman play. These days the only sport that I watch are the games on NITV -- honest, down-to-earth effort, untainted by millionaire salaries.

BTW, I used to enjoy playing soccer when I was young, and I enjoyed watching English football because it was a free flowing, attacking game. German football was the start of the decline, and now everyone is playing that same boring style.

X2. Different time, different situations. All jerks out there on 'salary' would welcome that because they get paid for

no work.

I say to all those supporting this stupid idea, YES we have a public holiday but YOU don't get paid. See how quick

they retreat. As we go about our daily chores, we fail to see who it is that is suffering from Cost Of Living increases.

People at the supermarket walk out with full trolleys (business as usual), Costco would have to be doing a roaring

trade based on the number of expensive appliances going out the door ($3000+ TV etc), all the people who paid to

go watch a WWC game, etc...

Further more, The Diamonds won the world cup. Don't hear anything about a national holiday. The Australian

cricket team do a tremendous job at winning, not only no noise a bout a public holiday but no enough recognition.

To whom this may concern, Put  this public holiday idea In Perspective.

Cost of living, I just got my electricity bill out the the mailbox.
I nearly fell over.
Where I am we are surrounded by solar farms and wind turbines and a few new ones being built now.
The overseas Dodgy Bros opertors who built the ones there so far were simply in it to construct and sell for a massive profit (now being paid for by us!!!!)..
I went to a few of the meetings and I won't mention the countries involved and their accents but all they told was a heap of lies and wrecked many farmers long time friendships and they simply could not give a rats who they destroy or what farmland they wreck.
A lot of this climate change stuff is simply for big bucks for overseas corporates to just rip us off again.
Having said that, we must have the dumbest politicians in the world (universe maybe) that allow these scams to happen under our noses constantly.
Public holiday indeed!!!!!!
We need a Public Flogging for a certain political leader with the brains of a p*ssant.
Away from digressing into that blast, what little I saw of the end of the womens soccer the other night was brilliant.
All the way up to the point that Elmer Fudd turned up with his Aussie scarf on and that brought all the bad language out of me and immediately switched channels so I didn't have to look at that clown.
I am yet to meet anyone who has a good word about him, every person I know usually has a four letter adjective attached to his name?
Amazing he is even in the country, he always seems to be swanning off somewhere overseas b*llsh*tting to someone silly enough to listen to him.
If not overseas he is always at the footy.
How much are we paying this bloke to NOT do his job and wreck this formerly great country?

There's hardly a line of this that I can agree with.

You lost ... get over it.

Perhaps you'd like to revert to the corrupt & inept regime of the late departed smirking con man, who can't seem to get a post parliament job anywhere in the world.  Perhaps they have heard of his previous employment record.

It'll take generations to correct the errors & omissions that were created over the decade of his lot.

Albo & co are a breath of fresh air.

Also I thought that towards the end of the match, especially during the added on stoppage time, along with the penalty shoot out, was edge of the chair stuff

It also looks like, it could have been one of the largest TV audiences, programs

Cupie.
I didn't lose.
Didn't vote for the other mob either.
Don't vote for either of the major two parties.
They are both incompetent and corrupt.
The current one in there is beyond incompetent.
Damage done by them will be Titanic.
Albo is a breath of air alright, wrong end.
His pronunciation is probably better coming out the other end.
It is a sad country when our leader is virtually illiterate.
Public holiday indeed, he wouldn't know, like so many of his team, never had a job.

Neither for me.
We are desperate for a REAL Australian in the role.
These stupid pollies are putting the Matilda's weights up.
They are under enough pressure with the finals let alone announce a public holiday before the event.
Imbeciles.
