Sad but true

Our old former next door neighbours from the last town we lived in now are at a nursing home approx 100 klms or so from where they lived.  Today we took it upon ourselves to travel the 100 plus klms to see them once again as we have done in the past. He turns 94 on 3 Oct and his wife is 90. He served in Singapore so still has a few mates alive plus all the ones who know him.

Talking to him today I asked him has any of his mates visited him in the past 12 months or so since moving into the nursing home.

Sadly not one of them.  It's a tough old world out there, especially on the elderly who get shoved from pillar to post just to get into  a nursing home

When one of my parents was in a nursing home, which we were very happy with, us siblings were visiting 3 times a week. The staff said a sizable percentage of patients never get a single visitor ever or for a year. Eye opening stuff.

When our parent died they asked if we would be happy to donate clothes as said people otherwise don't get any new clothes. Which we did, plus a few other things.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs for the majority.

I am a resident of a nursing home, and I second the comments above. A few residents get visitors from time to time, but most of them live a lonely life. Mind you, a lot of them wouldnt know if they had visitors or not. Suffice to say that I am working madly to recover my physical abilities and get out of here ASAP.

Also back in the early 90's I used to drive for Community Transport where I lived at the time. Sadly this is another job where you see the same thing. You know, picking up an elderly lady for a visit to hairdresser or a medical appointment and because of the job I had at the time in hospitality I knew 1000's of people. On the run sheet you see their surname of course and casually I'd mention such and such would come into where I worked with same surname. They would then tell you that it was their son or daughter BUT they never visit. Maybe at Christmas time or maybe a birthday and that was it. Bugger me, they lived in the same town/city.
My Mum is close to 500 klms away now and approaching 94 and we try to get there every 3 or 4 months as she is slowing down quickly and you never know when the time will be that we are all expecting.

The sad fact that current federal Gov policy changes in aged care make it nearly impossible to continue to provide that care in smaller rural areas.

Smart theory ideas don't always work in practice.
