Who has good knowledge of Omeo Highway

Planning next excursion and looking at Omeo Hway from Omeo to say

Mitta Mitta and onwards.

Can any experienced traveller give me a bit of an insight into conditions

for a 21 footer and big tug? April/May 2024.

I have only driven it without a van.
Big tug is a big plus.
Some beautiful valleys with some straightish roads, and a lot of winding road.
No major climbs I can recall.

Should be OK, but be cautious on the corners. I recollect one rather narrow right hander with a drop off on the right when we drove it last in our 7 metre bus. Wouldn't want to drop a van wheel over the edge! After the Blue Duck heading toward Mitta Mitta IIRC. Was a while back but can't imagine it's any different today. Lovely free camp on the banks of the river, on the left , before you reach Mitta Mitta. Have travelled the road a number of times, but usually on a motorcycle.

EDIT. With thanks to Plain Truths post below - I realised that my car seat covers are made by Black Duck & the pub on the Omeo- Mitta road is the Blue Duck & amended my post.  Oops.

Brodie you will have no trouble,we go over at least 2 to 4 times a year, towing.

From Omeo to Glen Willis there are 3 good sites for vans. Anglers Rest on the Conbungra, right opposite the Blue Duck Pub.

About 9km. past the Duck is Jokers Flat, got to keep your open for the turnoff, bit of a dirt track going down, but it has been widened out and regraded last time we were there. 2 drop toilets and tables and fireplaces.

I would recommend the next one for first timer, at Big River.Drop toilet and tables, fireplaces.Unhook and explore the area.

Mittagundi youth camp next door worth a look, the Yellow Girl mine close by, or a day trip up to Falls Creek.

Going over the top of the range a couple of short sections for the Prado, down to 1st gear twice, 1400M. to the top.

Then we just put it in 2nd. and amble down to Mitta Mitta. On the way down you will pass some great free camps.

The first one Lightning Creek, then The Walnuts,a slight diversion to Holloway Log Rd. camp, all on water with drop toilets.

When you reach Mitta Mitta, there is The Mill free camp on the main Hwy.But it is better to to take the Mitta nth.back road.

Go to Katie Peters camp area, or just past is Jack Swasbrick camp area, this fairly new all on water with toilets and fireplaces.

This road brings you out at Eskdale. Don't to to have a meal at the Mitta Pub and the Mitta Brewery.

Take your time and enjoy, sometimes it takes us 2 weeks to get to Mitta Mitta.

Hi Brodie, the rocks are from campers making little rock pools or barriers for the young children to play in,that is Katie Peters camping area.

Met Mike Harding a great former member up there with his ham radio antenna setup.

If you are pushing further on up,some great free camping on the Upper Murray around Corryong.

Hi Brodie,

Sorry to give you the bad news but the Blue Duck Bridge over the Cobungra River on the Great Alpine Road is washed out and the road is closed. I am not sure when Vic Rads will reopen it. I live in Bairnsdale and I suggest that you pick a different route to travel.
